Happy Chinese New Year!

"New Year Cake"

Lucky red pockets

That's pretty much all my day has consisted of. We had a big family dinner at Star Walk Buffet on Saturday night (which was rather mediocre, actually, but my grandpa loves buffets) for a pre-Chinese New Year meal, but that was as celebratory as we got for this holiday. My mom pan-fried some "New Year Cake" with egg this morning, which she does every year for new luck and prosperity for the new year. Of course, for me, nothing really says prosperity like red pockets... (Which will pay for my new iPhone 4S that I got a couple days ago when I renewed my cell phone contract. And man, what an upgrade from the 3GS! I took those pictures above with my new phone using the Hipstamatic app, and they look about ten times better than pictures taken with my 3GS.) Hope you all have a fantastic Dragon year!

  1. Happy new year, Denise!!

New Year Cake looks delish and I'm so jealous of red pockets. (We don't do pockets and I'd be the one giving them out, anyway, boo.) Can't wait for the next beauty haul paid for with today's proceeds. ;)

    1. Thanks, Liz! :)

Haha, the New Year Cake actually looks kinda gross to me, but it does taste pretty good! :) Why would you be the one giving out red pockets (in theory)?

And... you know me too well. :P

    2. My parents are unemployed, one sister is working volunteer and my brother is an unemployed student. The other sister is now working but she was a student also for the longest time. So, I'm the only one that had a steady job for the past 10 years. Christmas and birthdays are basically one big red pocket fest for them. If karma & reincarnation co-exist, I'm going to be a billionaire in my next life. ;)

    3. WOW, that's so weird. I've never even heard of that. In Chinese tradition, it's only those who are OLDER than you and MARRIED that give out red pockets. So my mom receives red pockets from her parents and her older siblings who are married, but no one who is younger (her younger siblings/cousins/whoever, and anyone in a younger generation).

I hope we are friends in your next life, then. ;)

    4. Oh, I don't mean literal red pockets. I just mean money, LOL. Just keep doing what you're doing and we're good for the next life. ;)

    1. I actually don't know if this stuff is available all year 'round here, 'cause I only ever eat it around New Year, lol. Most places won't bother selling it all year, though, 'cause it's not that popular until CNY. According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nian_gao. :)

And... I'm not a huge fan of this stuff, anyway, LOL. Soooo, I don't think you're missing out on much, personally. ;) Happy New Year to you, too!

    1. Aww, Fieran -- I would totally send you some except I'm not sure how well it would sit on a transatlantic flight. :P What's Yee Sang?

And thank you, I would take either make-up or money, actually. ;) Hope the Year of the Dragon treats you well -- I hope we ALL BECOME RICH. :D

    2. It's like a fish salad http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yusheng . The tradition is for people to sit around a table and toss it together while cheering "lo hei" to usher in prosperity. I have eaten it very very few times in Malaysia but it's something many people do - even if we're not Chinese - in Malaysia. We celebrate each other's festivity, it's one of the nicest things about living in Malaysia, you're immersed in so many different cultures and you kind of call it your own.

    3. Oh, wow, so weird, I've never had that fish salad!!! I've never even heard of it! I am a BAD ASIAN. :P

And I love traditions like that, where everyone just comes together to celebrate! :)
