Fat Phill's

So, after reading Mary's rave about the burgers at Fat Phill's on Twitter, the boys and I decided to try it out tonight:

Little Guy Burger (4 oz.)

Among a flurry of other items, Fat Phill's offers five types of burgers: Little Guy (4 oz.), Big Guy (7 oz.), Suicide Squeeze (14 oz. in two patties), Turkey Burger, and Veggie Burger. While the boys each got a Big Guy burger, I opted for the Little Guy. All of us ordered cheese and bacon for them as well, which is $1.00 extra each. On my burger, I decided to get lettuce, tomato, pickles, tzatziki sauce, and mayo. The patty was flavourful and quite juicy, but I found it to be on the slightly well-done side. The bacon was good, not too crispy or chewy, and added a nice smoky flavour. The bun was a little too thick and starchy for my liking, but it does make it more substantial and able to hold more toppings, if you so desired. However, I didn't like that they use shredded cheese, and that they didn't melt it on the grill with the bun — rookie mistake! I would put this burger better than chains like South Street Burger, Hero Burger, and Five Guys, and on par with Johnny's, but definitely nowhere near Burger's Priest (which, let's be honest, is a transcendent experience). I do think the quality of your burger is dependent on who is cooking it, though, 'cause I swear to you, both guys that were working tonight were definitely stoned out of their minds.

Coney Island Fries

We also got an order of Coney Island Fries, which is essentially fries with chili and cheese (we got a mixture of cheddar and mozzarella). The fries are a good cut, not too thick or thin, and not too starchy but will still hold on their own with the chili and the fries on top (e.g. won't get too soggy). The chili is surprisingly good, too; flavourful and substantial with lots of ground beef and beans. The shredded cheese works well here, as it's more evenly dispersed and melts better on top of the hot chili and fries. Plus, the portion you get is actually huge — more than enough for three people to share. At $4.75, it's really a steal and I would definitely order it again. Not pictured is a banana-chocolate milkshake, which is super-tasty with the perfect creamy consistency that isn't too thick or runny. Also a definite recommend. Overall, Fat Phill's reminded me quite a lot of Johnny's — it's a small, no-frills, old-school style neighbourhood burger joint with good food at really affordable prices.

  1. Hmmmmmmmmmm... My order of burger love goes:

    Hero < Five Guys <<<<<<<< Burger's Priest

If this is a contender on the scale, must try!

    1. Your scale is basically like mine, and I put this burger in between Five Guys and Burger's Priest. ;) So, yes, worth checking out!!!
