Unboxing: BTS Global Official Fanclub ARMY Membership Kit 2020

Saturday, December 26, 2020
In all the hubbub of work and Christmas, I totally forgot to pick up my packages that were delivered this week from the concierge. So I'm gonna treat these unboxings like opening Christmas presents. Except it's now Boxing Day. And also they're gifts to myself. And also I pre-ordered these months ago, so technically, I didn't know they were going to be for Christmas. But, whatever. The first package I got was my long-awaited BTS ARMY Membership Kit! I renewed my membership in August, and this year's theme is fairy tales. (Last year's was superhero movies.) You can opt to renew your membership without getting the kit because the membership itself has perks (early access to concert ticket sales, exclusive merch, online raffles, etc.), but the kit is so gorgeous, I don't know why you wouldn't get it if you're gonna sign up for membership, anyway.

This year's kit features a gorgeous metal lightbox in the shape of a book. Inside are standing pieces featuring the boys in their character roles, and it comes with a detachable light to create a different atmosphere. A very cool, very pretty display piece. At least, the coolest, prettiest, glorified night light I have ever seen.

The kit also comes with a pouch of little goodies, including a "user guide," a magnetic bookmark, and of course, the requisite photocards. One distinct difference from this year's kit to last year's is that all written content includes English translations, which I am very grateful for because I don't understand any of the text from last year's kit. The user guide tells you exactly what's in the kit and what to do with it:
  • Lightbox: "The booklamp box that will invite ARMY into the fairytale world."
  • Membership card: "Always keep your membership card in your wallet."
  • Photocards: "Seven photocards showing BTS at their sharpest and smartest yet!"
  • Pouch: "Pouch perfect for safekeeping your precious things."
  • Magnetic bookmark: "Mark the page ARMY wants to keep near and dear."
  • ARMY ZIP photobook: "They became the main characters of stories written just for ARMY! Let the tales unfold!"

The photobook, of course, includes photos of the boys as different fairytale characters, plus subunit photoshoots, (translated!) interviews, and even colouring pages. We have RM as Daddy-Long-Legs, Jin as the Little Prince, Suga as Puss in Boots, J-Hope as Pinocchio, Jimin as the Pied Piper, V as Uturi from the Korean folk tale Agijangsu, and Jungkook as Peter Pan. I love that they picked some obscure or less popular characters as well as some of the universally-known ones, too, to really cover the theme of fairy tales. Of course, they all look beautiful in these shoots; Jimin as Pied Piper is especially gorgeous. Overall, I like this year's theme and kit a lot more than last year's. It's more elegant and better curated. There's no poster, which is a little disappointing, but there are also four separate merch kits included with my membership this year (I paid for the premium "merch pack" membership), so I'm excited. I'll be opening the first merch box tomorrow!
