Ying and I went to Oomomo to get some household items and random knick knacks and saw that they had opened up a Hattendo pop-up shop right in the centre of the store! I've seen people raving over these Japanese cream buns all over social media and had been wanting to try them for months, but all of their store fronts in Toronto are downtown and I didn't want to make the trip down there especially with the city being in lockdown right now. So we took the opportunity to pick up some buns while they were still open at Oomomo. (And if you spend more than $20 before tax at Oomomo, you get 10% off anything from the Hattendo pop-up!)

We decided to share three buns, so we chose the original custard, taro, and whipped cream. They are indeed light, fluffy delights, filled with a very generous amount of cream in the centre. They get a bit dangerous to eat because they're so light that you don't think you're eating that much and you can easily down three buns to yourself and still feel like you can eat another three.

What's good, though, is that they're not too sweet. The whipped cream flavour was actually a bit too plain for me, but the custard was excellent — slightly thicker and stickier than the whipped cream, and has a nice milky sweetness that anyone can enjoy. The taro, however, ended up being my favourite, with the perfect amount of flavour — think of taro bubble tea, which tastes similar to a vanilla milkshake — and a nice consistency in which you can actually feel the graininess of taro. Sadly, it's a seasonal flavour but I really hope they add it to their permanent line-up 'cause it's just one of those crowd-pleasing flavours, you know? I also hope they keep the pop-up open for a bit longer so I can go back and get some of the other flavours — they have a limited edition peach flavour I want to try — as well as their melon buns, which look similar to Hong Kong pineapple buns (a childhood staple).
