Finally found some time to take Tuta out for a belated birthday dinner. We wanted Korean BBQ, so I took her to Kobi, which I'd been wanting to try out since peeping it after going to Ssangkye Jjimdak last month (they're in the same plaza). There are actually quite a lot of Korean BBQ places in this area of Toronto (it's Koreatown North), but most of them are on Yonge Street, which means street parking. And since street parking gives me anxiety, Kobi is ideal for me to get to as it's in a plaza with a huge parking lot. Anyway, Tuta wanted me to do all the ordering because I eat so much Korean food, so I got us both samgyeopsal and skirt steak (I always like to have both pork and beef at Korean BBQ) and the seafood pajeon. Gyeran-jjim and doenjang-jjigae on the side, along with kimchi, potato salad, pajeori, and pickled sliced onions.
As expected, everything was tasty AF and so satisfying. People that only go to AYCE Korean BBQ chains like Korean Grill House and Chako (which are Chinese-run and are quite honestly nothing like real Korean BBQ) don't even know what they're missing. I'd been craving good authentic Korean BBQ since Jongro in NYC, and while the cuts of meat at Kobi aren't as high quality (to be fair, it's also not nearly as expensive — Kobi is about a third of the price of Jongro) and the server wasn't as attentive to grilling (he placed the meat on the grill for us, but didn't come back to flip them for us so we did most of the cooking, though he did come back to cut up the meat), it still really hit the spot. The pork belly was perfectly fatty, and the beef was flavourful and surprisingly tender despite being skirt steak. The pajeon was also incredible here, thick and plush on the inside with loads of scallions and chunks of seafood, and nicely crisped and golden on the outside.
I will eventually try Daldongnae, which is currently considered the best Korean BBQ in Toronto (and is about a two-minute drive from Kobi), but until I find someone who will street park on Yonge Street for me, Kobi will be my go-to. I need to go back to try the cheese BBQ, anyway (it's Korean BBQ meets fondue!).
