This week's Saturday Nine:
You can hear this week's song here.
You can hear this week's song here.
- The title of this song, "Mother and Child Reunion," came from a dish Paul Simon had at a Chinese restaurant. "Mother and Child Reunion" was chicken and egg drop soup. When did you last eat chicken? This evening. I had chicken karaage at Markham Sushi.
- Paul Simon's mother, Belle, was an English teacher Monday through Friday and then gave piano lessons on the weekends. Have you ever worked more than one job? Yep. From 2006 to 2007, I worked at Shoppers Drug Mart as a beauty advisor on weekends and as a cashier and barista at Richtree Market (now defunct) on weekdays. And then from early 2008 to late 2009, I worked at Lancôme as a full-time beauty advisor and still kept my job at Shoppers Drug Mart on weekends, so I worked about 50 hours a week.
- Mother Winters taught Sam to always dispose of the dry cleaning bag, as storing clothes in the bag may discolour the fabric. Do you have any useful household hints to pass along? A few drops of dishwashing detergent in a small cup of apple cider vinegar is the most effective way of catching fruit flies; the vinegar attracts them and the dishwashing detergent kills them.
- Have you put away your winter clothes yet? My winter coat is hanging in my closet. I wear everything else in my wardrobe all year round. I just switch up the amount of layers according to season.
- Flowers and plants are popular on Mother's Day. How is your yard or garden? Is it green and/or blooming? The grass is green now. And the lily bulbs that the landscapers planted years ago are also growing now. It's still too early for blooms, but the stalks have grown out of the soil now.
- In the 1600s, the British began celebrating "Mothering Sunday." Children presented flowers to their mothers after Sunday service. When did you last place flowers in a vase? Where they store-bought, or picked from someone's garden? I honestly can't remember. It might've been years ago from a boyfriend. Either way, any and all flowers I've ever received were store-bought.
- The German word for "mother" is "mutter." What other German words do you know? My best friend back in the day is German and he taught me some key words. I can count to three: "Ein, zwei, drei." I also know "schlafen," which means sleep. And then some swear words, of course. "Sheisse," which means shit. "Fick dich," which means "fuck you." And the worst one, "fotze," which means cunt.
- When Sam was a teen, her mother used to scold her for monopolizing the family landline. With the advent of cell phones, do you think parents and children still clash over telephone etiquette? Yeah, probably over appropriate usage, like not to use it at the dinner table or in class or in front of house guests.
- To celebrate Mother's Day, Sam is giving away her mother's favourite, Hershey Bars! Would you prefer classic milk chocolate, dark chocolate or milk chocolate with almonds? Dark chocolate with almonds.
