Mong Kok Chinese Restaurant

My parents and I went for dim sum this afternoon at Mong Kok:

Steamed shrimp dumplings (Har gow)

Steamed pork, mushroom, and shrimp dumpings (Siu mai)

Pan-fried daikon patties

Shrimp rice noodle rolls (cheung fun)

Congee with lean pork and preserved egg

Hot pot rice with Chinese pork sausage and cured pork

Hot pot rice with pork spare ribs

Egg custard tarts

They offer the average amount of dim sum dishes, and the food is decent but not particularly memorable. You can order dim sum in two ways here, by check-marking the order sheet or by ordering straight from the trolleys that are going around (I mention this, because food gets to your table faster and more efficiently!). I wouldn't recommend this place over another, but the prices are actually quite good — we paid about $30 after tax and tip for all of these dishes. My parents love this place because it's cheap, it's close to home, and dim sum is available until late afternoon. It doesn't stand out, but it will satisfy any dim sum cravings you have. Where do you go for dim sum?

  1. Ugh. We keep making the mistake of going to Elegant Chinese Cuisine (the one near Congee Queen at McCowan/Hwy 7. It's pretty expensive for what it is. We spent like $35 for 8 dishes and I think half of those were small sizes, too. It's not horrible but I prefer my dimsum either dirt cheap or Casa Victoria.

On a completely different note, everytime I go there I have a very immature fit of giggles.... I guess at least they didn't name it something like Golden Kok or Superior Kok.

    1. I don't think I've ever been to Elegant Chinese Cuisine... (I did, however, go to that Congee Queen location for the first time last week!). But I totally agree, I either like dim sum really cheap or Casa Victoria, lol.

Have you been to Mong Kok for dim sum? It's really not that bad. I think it's an average of $30 for 10 dishes? The three of us ate there for $30 after tax and tip, which I don't consider to be very pricey... At least, that's how much I would spend at McDonald's. :P

LOL @ Superior Kok -- the name Mong Kok just reminds me of the subway station in Hong Kong. :P

  2. Oh my god. What I would give for a plate of Cheung fan now! That Cheung fan is known as "Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fan" in Malaysia. *Drools all over keyboard* And the egg tart.

The only upside is that I've booked tickets to go home end of June/beginning of July :)

    1. Haha, I KNOW, SO GOOD. Shrimp cheung fan is my favourite -- I don't like any of the ones with parsley/cilantro. Which is basically all of the other ones, lol. And you can't end a dim sum session without egg tarts! :)

Awww, yay, so glad that you get to go home this summer! You better take loads of pictures (of FOOD!!!).

    2. I'll try :) I'm always too busy eating.

There's another version of cheung fan that is eaten with sauce and fish cake filled vegetables. Those are wonderful too.

    3. LOL, I guess I have tons of self-control when I dine out -- I always take that picture first and then chow down. ;)

I don't think I've ever tried (or heard of) that cheung fan with fish cake-filled vegetables... Sounds tasty, though!!!

    1. Yes, we should!!! We really should plan a date when we're all free!!! :D

Oddly enough, I only like preserved egg in congee. I don't like it otherwise, lol.
