MAC Fashion Sets (North America): Lipglasses

on
Monday, May 14, 2012

On May 3, MAC released a collection called Fashion Sets, which features seven colour sets that include a lipstick, lip gloss, and nail polish. To avoid any confusion, each product is sold separately, despite being called "sets." MAC took seven best-selling lip shades by region and made corresponding lipsticks, lip glosses, and nail polishes. Each region (North America, Asia Pacific, Europe and Africa, and Latin America and Middle East) will have their seven region-specific shades available in-stores, but all shades from all regions are available online. This review includes six of the North American shades only. Fashion Sets features seven shades of Lipglass, six of which are new and limited edition, and one of which is permanent at all locations. Each Lipglass comes in regular black packaging, contains 4.8 grams of product, and retails for $17.50. These shades are applicable for the Back To MAC recycling program at MAC Stores only.

Rebel, Girl About Town, Snob, Myth, Spice, and Russian Red

Rebel is a medium-dark brightened berry pink. It is a new and limited edition shade. It was inspired by Rebel lipstick. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is slightly darker and more plum than its lipstick counterpart. It is lighter and more pink than Pop Mode, and much brighter and less brown than Desire.

Girl About Town is a medium bright cool-toned fuchsia pink. It is a new and limited edition shade. It was inspired by Girl About Town lipstick. It goes on smoothly and evenly, with high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is slightly brighter than its lipstick counterpart. It is brighter and cooler than Pink Poodle, and much more opaque than Loud & Lovely Cremesheen Glass.

Snob is a light cool-toned pink. It is a new and limited edition shade. It was inspired by Snob lipstick. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has medium-high pigmentation and semi-opaque colour pay-off. Due to its milkier appearance, it can settle into lip lines. It is slightly warmer than its lipstick counterpart. It is cooler than Underage, and darker and more opaque than Fashion Scoop Cremesheen Glass.

Myth is a pale peachy beige. It is a new and limited edition shade. It was inspired by Myth lipstick. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. Due to its milkier appearance, it can settle into lip lines. It is darker and much more peach than its lipstick counterpart. It is darker and more peach than C-Thru, and much more opaque than Fashion Whim Cremesheen Glass.

Spice is a medium rosy brown. This is a new and limited edition shade. It was inspired by Spice Lip Pencil. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is very similar to its lipstick counterpart. It is much darker than Lust, and more opaque than Over Indulgence Cremesheen Glass.

Russian Red is a medium bright neutral red. This is a permanent shade. It goes on smoothly and evenly, and has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It leans slightly warmer than its lipstick counterpart, but they are similar for the most part. It is much more of a true red than Venetian Lustreglass, and lighter than Driven by Love Pro Longwear Lipglass.

I didn't really have any problems with these glosses — they perform exactly as you would expect them to, with the lighter, milkier colours (Snob and Myth) being more prone to settle into lip lines. Girl About Town, Spice, and Russian Red were the best performers, going on completely opaque and looking exceptionally smooth and even on the lips. Rebel had slight streaking problems that is common with darker glosses, but it goes on opaque for the most part. Fashion Sets as a whole is a really great concept for those who really like their glosses to match their lipsticks. If you have the lipstick counterparts and want the glosses to go with them, check these out — all of the shades except for Russian Red are limited edition.

  1. Oh good, so I can work my way to Russian Red some day. I like the look of it but am too chicken to wear it any time soon. I love seeing the entire sets together but individually they don't do much for me.

    1. Haha, Russian Red is gorgeous -- it pretty much looks good on everyone. Same with Viva Glam I (my favourite red of all time). :) You'd look fantastic in both of them. Just sayin'.

I've always been more of a lipstick person, so the glosses aren't must-haves to me... but I do think they're less intimidating to someone who doesn't wear a lot of colour. :) I like them individually, but I can see the sets making them more inviting.
