Born To Die

I have seriously had Lana Del Rey's album on repeat for the last two weeks. I kid you not — it's on when I put my make-up on every morning, when I'm driving, when I shower... There's just something about her voice; it's imperfect, breathy, melancholic, honest, beautiful. And the mix of violins, piano, harp, and almost trip hop-esque beats... Say what you will about her "indie cred" or her SNL performance or her "blow job lips." Good music is good. And this video? Exquisite.

  1. I've been pretty obsessed with this song and Video games!! I have it on repeat while I drive! I LOVE IT SO MUCH! Everytime I hear it, it's like I'm hearing it for the first time!

    1. Every time she sings, "Come and take a walk on the wild side," I get chills. So gorgeous. Haha, I totally owe it all to you for this new obsession. ;)

I was really surprised to see that her album was getting so many negative reviews (there are plenty of positive ones, too, but the negative ones seem to be REALLY negative). She is getting so much criticism and hate, and I feel like all of the reasons are really unjustified. I totally came across a site that just bashed her for being "faux-indie" when she's just a "wannabe-hipster" trying to be mainstream. Like, SERIOUSLY? That's a reason to hate an artist? It's just so ridiculous. My dad always said to me, "If it sounds good, listen to it." And that's how we should all appreciate music.

    2. You have a new layout!!!

She has been getting a lot of online bashing!! I think she's getting them because she's beautiful and people aren't taking her as seriously as someone who is more "unique" looking. Do you get what I mean? I have a feeling people are like, she's too beautiful, she's trying too hard to be "indie" and a "hispster". I don't know, its just my opinion.

    3. LOL, no, I was trying out some different templates, but ultimately, I'm not satisfied with any of these other ones at the moment, mostly due to sizing and picture-to-text ratio, etc., even though I really like the clean look of "dynamic" layouts. :P

Ehhhh... But then, look at Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, who are both, erm, "unique" looking, as they say, and they are some of the most popular artists right now. The way I see it is, Lana Del Rey could look like a frumpy, homeless bag lady, for all I care. I enjoy her music, and that's what matters. Of course, in the pop music industry, for every one person that loves you, you get about 100 that hate you. And, after the Grammys, I have realized that we live in a world where today's youth know who don't know who Paul McCartney is... and yet they know all of Justin Bieber's songs. This seriously blows my mind.

    1. I don't get why it's a guilty pleasure! I really like her music. Like, why is there so much backlash with this girl? Maybe I don't know enough of the details of her background or whatever, but hey, if the music's good, I'll listen to it. There are some inconsistencies in mood and sound, both lyrically and vocally, but I think it's a really solid album, overall. (Personally, I enjoy Lana Del Rey's songs about 100 times more than Adele's songs, and Adele is a 5-time Grammy winner.) I feel like, as I get older, I'm so over the "what's cool to like" or "what's not cool to like." I guess I just don't care to be cool! I've totally been listening to old-school Hanson, like I did in Grade 5 and 6, and I remembered just why I liked them when I was 11.

Lol, I would never have thought she looks like Julia Roberts... Julia Roberts eyes are slightly further apart and brown... and Julia's lips are much more shapeless (she has almost no cupid's bow). I think maybe the closest thing would be the nose... (And I totally didn't realize this, but Julia Roberts has the hugest smile I have ever seen. Like, Joker-style.)

    2. LOL! My mom's description of Julia Roberts (pretty much the only international actress she knows is "the one with the wide mouth"

      Oh mom.

    3. LOL. Her smile is equal parts charming and scary-as-hell.

  3. I've been avoiding all things Lana Del Rey...

The backlash is the result of major PR hype before we even had a chance to hear her music properly. All I heard of was her name everywhere and I got TIRED of her before I even knew that she was a singer.

But since YOUR indie music cred is solid, I shall have a listen at this when I'm home! ;)

    1. Okay, see, I had never heard of Lana Del Rey until, oh... two weeks ago? As in, the day I followed a link to YouTube, watched some videos, and liked them enough to download the album. I didn't know (and still don't care) about the PR, her background, her plastic surgery, her "re-invention," etc.

To be fair, I had not heard of Nicki Minaj until she was announced as MAC's 2012 Viva Glam ambassador. :P I don't watch cable or listen to the radio, so I rarely ever know a new artist, lol. What can I say, the only thing I care to keep updated on is make-up. :P

Listen to it! I personally like her music a lot. As I said earlier, I enjoy Lana Del Rey's songs about 100 times more than Adele's songs, and Adele is a 5-time Grammy winner.
