I originally planned to take my mom for afternoon tea at the Essence of Unionville for Mother's Day, but they quite literally doubled the price from last year and my mom thought it was too much of a rip-off for some scones and tea sandwiches. So I let her decide on where to go for Mother's Day and she chose one of her go-to spots, La Piazzetta at the Monte Carlo Inn.

Despite its very Italian name, La Piazzetta is actually a Hong Kong-style Western restaurant, similar to Dickens. (I'm guessing a Chinese person bought it out years ago and never changed the name.) It was a full house this evening — this place is a favourite among Hong Kong immigrant boomers like my mom, and it seemed like all of their families decided to celebrate Mother's Day here, us included. They were offering a Mother's Day set menu, so I chose the smoked salmon and shrimp bruschetta salad to start, and the Angus steak with mashed potatoes as my main (I've been feeling very steak-y recently). All set dinners also came with tiramisu for dessert and a choice of tea or coffee. Both my mom and I were totally satisfied, and the three-course dinner for the two of us after tax and tip was just under $130 — cheaper than what afternoon tea would've cost.
That having been said, Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there — you're the world's real heroes.
