Technically, Hanamaru Udon is a "self-service" restaurant. There is a huge variety of sides — mostly tempura, but also ongiri and oden — that you grab yourself and put on your tray, but the actual udon is made to order by the cook behind the counter. I selected a medium bowl of udon with beef and a runny egg served in hot broth, and added shrimp and yam tempura on the side. It was freaking amazing and cost less than ¥1,300. WHY DON'T WE HAVE THIS BACK HOME?
