After a 2-hour shopping spree at the 12-storey Uniqlo flagship store in Ginza, we were starving and looking for a decent restaurant for dinner. We had decided to get sushi for dinner but on the way to search for one restaurant, we instead found ourselves at an izakaya called Tofuro that looked busy but very promising. Also because it was raining and we didn't want to walk anymore. The place was packed but luckily, we managed to get a table at the counter.
"Luxurious" chirashi
Assorted tempura
In lieu of sushi, we each got the "luxurious" chirashi and an order of tempura to share. The chirashi had an excellent variety of fresh fish, a good fish-to-rice ratio, and a decent portion size. This bowl, which would easily have cost over $30 in Canada (plus tax and tip) and includes uni (admittedly, very small pieces of it, but still), was $20 (no tax, no tip). The tempura was also delicious — lightly battered, perfectly crispy, no sogginess or oily flavour — and came in a good variety of shrimp, vegetables, and fish. They serve it with salt instead of a tentsuyu dipping sauce which better emphasizes the natural flavours of each ingredient. I was thoroughly satisfied with this dinner. For the quality and portion sizes, I thought it was entirely worth it. Plus, the servers are super nice and helpful — one guy even walked me all the way to the bathroom in case I didn't understand him. I wouldn't necessarily go out of the way to eat here, but if you're in the Ginza area and you're looking for a casual izakaya with a good variety of food that is open late, this is a nice option.
