Okay, wow, I totally forgot about this pre-order until it arrived yesterday.
J-Hope Jack in the Box Official Merch — Hope in the Box and Arson Candle
So J-Hope's album, Jack in the Box, was released in July (you can read my post for the album unboxing here) and with it, a small collection of merch — a total of 9 products — was also released. Of course, the majority of it sold out within minutes, including the two items I actually wanted — the Hope in the Box and the Arson Candle — so I figured it just wasn't meant to be and cut my losses. But then they released a second pre-order the next day, so I was like, "THIS IS MY CHANCE. NO FOMO!" and managed to get my two items. But the shipment period for this second pre-order wasn't until this month, so unfortunately, this post is purely FYI only because all of the Jack in the Box merch is no longer available for purchase.

The first item I bought was the Hope in the Box, which is quite literally a jack-in-the-box. This is "the key item and a visual representation of Jack in the Box." It measures 13.6 cm H x 13.6 cm W x 13.6 cm D, and comes in a metal tin with a little crank on the right side. The top of the tin box is printed with the track list of the album, while "the four sides are covered with cool graphics and the lyrics of 'More' and 'Arson,' the two main title songs of Jack in the Box." When you start turning the crank, it will play music that is "inspired by the melody of the album's sixth track, 'Music Box: Reflection," as suggested by J-Hope himself." (In full disclosure, the jack was already out of the box when I opened it so I did have to stuff it back in and crank it again to get the full heart-stopping startle of the jack popping out.)

Now, normally, a jack-in-the-box would SCARE THE SHIT OUT OF ME because I've had a fear of clowns since I was 3, but this one contains a super cute-sified jester rather than a clown. (I would absolutely not have bought this if it featured a clown.) The "jack" inside the box is made of a waffle weave fabric; the head is black, while the body is half-black and half-grey. It uses white threading for the eyes, nose, and mouth. It's wearing a little turquoise jester hat with little black pompoms, and a white ruffled collar made of a fabric ribbon material. It's cute and creepy at the same time, kind of like The Nightmare Before Christmas, rather than terrifying and psychologically damaging. (Can you tell that I DO NOT LIKE HORROR MOVIES?)

The Hope in the Box also comes with 2 photocards — one of J-Hope in the "MORE" MV, and the other one a J-Hope selfie, also taken from the "MORE" MV — and 7 graphic cards featuring various illustrations and lyrics from Jack in the Box. When these 9 cards are flipped over and pieced together, they form a big black-and-white graphic featuring various lyrics.

The only other item I bought was the Arson Candle, which is of course, named after the title track from Jack in the Box. The candle comes in a solid black square glass holder with rounded edges, leaving the "ARSON" typography transparent, "so that the pink candle fills in the typography from the inside — a unique detail suggested by J-Hope." The wooden lid also comes in solid black and is engraved with the word, "BURN," to "visually represent the theme of the title song, 'Arson.'" Frankly, it would've been a wasted opportunity not to release a candle for a song named "Arson."
J-Hope personally chose the fragrance of the candle, which "exudes a fascinating combination of aromas: woody musk blended with vanilla for the base note, spicy balsam and soft jasmine for the middle note, and a powdery scent for the top note." I normally don't go for these types of scents as I usually opt for cleaner, fresher fragrances, but it kind of reminds me of a musky incense, which is oddly comforting and nostalgic to me. (Maybe it's because my grandma used to light incense everyday at her Buddhist altar in our childhood home.) I think the spicy warmth will be especially nice for winter, but frankly, I don't even know if I'll have the heart to light it...
