My favourite macaron spot, The Social Blend, collaborated with five local businesses for their "Local Love" box this month, which includes a total of nine flavours — one for each of the five local businesses, and four of their limited edition March flavours:

  1. Soul Chocolate Hazelnut Brownie: Chocolate hazelnut buttercream made using Soul Chocolate's chocolate hazelnut spread, brownie with hazelnut chunks in the centre
  2. 135 Ossington Tokyo Fog: Buttercream with a hint of orange zest, and cake made with 135 Ossington's jasmine tea in the centre
  3. Brodflour Everything Maple Bacon: Brodflour's house Bagel Spice, maple syrup buttercream with bacon bits, and a slice of bacon in the centre
  4. Rustle and Still Coffee Pandan: French buttercream made using Rustle and Still's pandan, with coffee pandan jelly and coffee cake in the centre
  5. Genuine Tea Hojicha Latte: Italian buttercream using Genuine Tea's organic microground hojicha latte blend with a Hojicha Kit Kat in the centre
  6. Honey Date: Buttercream with pureed dates, honey caramel in the centre, and toasted honey walnuts on the outside
  7. Coconut Latte: Coconut anglaise and espresso pâte à bombe swirl, coffee ganache in the centre, and wrapped in shredded coconut 
  8. Birthday Cake: White chocolate cream cheese frosting, vanilla funfetti cake in the centre, with sprinkles on top
  9. Piggy Bar: Milk ice cream-flavoured buttercream, house-made strawberry jam in the centre, dipped in chocolate, and wrapped in a mix of house-made chocolate and peanut crumbles

My favourites? 135 Ossington Tokyo Fog, Rustle and Still Coffee Pandan, Honey Date, and Piggy Bar. They were all unique and different from any kind of macaron flavour I'd had before, but the flavour combinations married really well together. As usual, the quality of the macarons are top-notch and the ratio of filling to cookie is, in my opinion, perfect. It's why I can't get enough of Korean-style macarons. Honestly, I think these would even change of the minds of macaron naysayers.

  1. That's a great write-up. I didn't even know Korean macarons were a thing until you used the phrase. Maybe I need to see if there are any in this town. Otherwise I might have to come there and try them. I'm super intrigued.

    1. Not gonna lie, Korean-style macarons are pretty niche, but I have found some variations in Korean bakeries or cafes around here. I don't know why they're not more common because, quite frankly, I like them more than French macarons. They're way bigger (they're also called "fat-carons" because they're so thick LOL) because they have a much higher cream-to-cookie ratio, but I think it makes it more like a true dessert that way. They come in way more creative and satisfying flavours, too. Definitely look out for them!
