I'm so proud that BTS could become the first Korean artists to perform at the GRAMMYs, but frankly, it is widely known that BTS were snubbed by the Recording Academy this year (to the point where music critics, journalists, and other artists wrote articles or made comments about it publicly). While trying to remain objective here, Map of the Soul: Persona is more influential, has more sales and streams, and has more complex lyrical content and music production than many of the nominees. We know the Recording Academy is still trying to catch up to the 21st century, thereby trying to nominate more POCs and women in the name of "equality," but they are still sorely lacking. I mean, hey, even their former CEO — who is on an administrative leave for misconduct — claimed that the awards show is rigged, saying, "There are incidents of conflict of interest that taint the results." But are we even surprised?
It was painfully obvious that the Recording Academy invited BTS for this collaboration because they know the power of ARMY and needed the views. Yes, RM had a feature on a remix of "Old Town Road," but Lil Nas X already had plenty of artists to collab with for this stage. RM even said in an interview that they didn't know they were going to perform until two weeks ago, which just screams "clout-seeker." That having been said, I respect the boys' decision to perform there, because ultimately, the GRAMMYs are still — for whatever reason — the most prestigious awards in music, despite how manipulative, fraudulent, and backwards the Recording Academy is. At least BTS looked like they were having fun, and it gave them more visibility to the general public.
But on a totally different note, the BTS stylists truly deserve a fucking raise. As Vulture put it, "[Lil Nas X] goofy-cowboy-strutted his way to BTS, who were so hot that CBS probably had to change the broadcast rating to 'for mature audiences only' then and there."
