Ying and I went to a second BTS Taehyung birthday cafe event held at Soul Cafe. We weren't originally planning to go to this one, but the hosts we talked to at the Cafe Bora event told us we should definitely check it out if we had time. So we went, 'cause honestly, it doesn't take much convincing for us to go to a BTS event. This one was in partnership with Winter StrawVerry (one of the biggest fansites for Taehyung), and was a global birthday cafe event that was being held in 16 cities across the world, Toronto being the only one in Canada.
After having gone to so many BTS cafe events now, I have learned that there's a difference between local cafe events and global cafe events, which I didn't realize before. Global events are always partnered with a major fansite from Korea, and that fansite actually ships out cup sleeves, photocards, posters, and other goods to the local hosts for the event. There's a uniformity to the global events because of this, and the materials that are used to make the cup sleeves and photocards that they give out are always better quality due to a higher budget. This is the standard in Korea for cafe events, of which there are dozens more per occasion. The fansite gives support to their partnered events around the world, so they also get more publicity (popular fansites have anywhere from 500K to 1 million+ followers). Local events rely solely on the hosts from planning to execution, and all the costs for the event are covered by them alone. The hosts have to do everything from the design of the cup sleeves, photocards, posters, etc. to acquiring all the decorations. And all of this is out of their own pocket. So the event we went to at Cafe Bora was a local one. The one at Soul Cafe was a global one.
Of course, Soul Cafe is a bigger space than Cafe Bora, so it can fit more people in there. There was a bit of a line-up inside, but at least we didn't have to be out in the cold. I ordered a French vanilla latte and Ying ordered a grapefruit tea, for which we got our Winter StrawVerry cup sleeves and four photocards. They also had a donation project for Sick Kids Hospital, where a donation of $5 got you the second cup sleeve design by Winter StrawVerry, a bookmark featuring Yeontan (V's adorable Pomeranian, the most beloved of the Bangtan pets), plus a cute little purple heart balloon, so both Ying and I donated $5. I will say, Soul Cafe was far more intensely decorated with Taehyung paraphernalia, maybe because of the partnership with Winter StrawVerry, or maybe because there was more space. Either way, it was a beautiful event, my latte was excellent, we weren't rushed, and it was warm and cozy inside. Plus, another ARMY gave out cute little chocolate packages as we were leaving. Honestly, I'm so glad that I discovered BTS and became an ARMY. Joining this community has given my life so much more interest and purpose, and I love that total strangers can get together like family to celebrate the members' birthdays and holidays and anniversaries.
Happy (early) Tae Day! Ying and I will be heading to another birthday event for Tae tomorrow, 'cause WHY THE HELL NOT?
