BTS at 2019 SBS Gayo Daejeon: "Boy With Luv," "Dionysus," and "Mikrokosmos"

Yes, I stayed up until 7:00AM watching this today, even though SBS uploaded these performances literally an hour later. (IT'S DIFFERENT WHEN YOU'RE WATCHING LIVE, OKAY?) Anyway, some final thoughts:

  • They look fucking majestic in light pink. Like, Jimin and Hobi in silk shirts and pants paired with combat boots was a look I didn't know I needed. (I imagine the stylists going through their outfits and being like, "How do we make the pink silk pajamas look more badass?") And Tae in that long brocade coat? Like, wow, he can wear an outfit designed for a 50-year-old English woman and look like a goddamn runway model. MUST BE NICE BEING BEAUTIFUL ALL THE TIME. YOU CAN WEAR A GARBAGE BAG AND LOOK STUNNING.

  • Oh, hello, Kookie's arm tattoos. I like that he didn't button up his right wrist as they would normally make him. He used to do the ending for "Boy With Luv," changing his hand from the gun sign to the ILY hand sign, and for televised stages, they would zoom in on it. But because Kookie has hand tattoos now, they get another member to do it. Like, we all know he has the tattoos? Why bother acting like he doesn't? I don't get why Korea is still so anti-tattoo. It's nearly 2020, for fuck's sake. I hope Kookie is able to wear short sleeves in the future. It would be a real fucking shame to hide his arms forever just because he got tattoos.

  • Jimin's left shoulder. (Yes, it deserves an entire bullet point on its own.)

  • VMIN SOULMATE CULTURE.

  • We know that BTS are the Kings of Multi-Genre; even for their end-of-year stages, "Boy With Luv," "Dionysus," and "Mikrokosmos" have vastly different sounds. They do this on purpose, to show that their music is multi-dimensional and they are capable of making any type of music sound incredible. As Yoongi once said, "If you listen to BTS without prejudice, you will find something you like." But what still amazes me is that not only are these songs all from the same damn EP, but Map of the Soul: Persona — with only seven songs total — manages to sound totally cohesive as an album. I cannot wait for their next comeback. It's going to be chaos. It will break the Internet. It will shatter records. They won't just be "the biggest boy band in the world." They'll be the biggest musicians in the world.
