Went to Nomé Izakaya for an early birthday dinner for Maegan with Tuta and Jason this evening:
Sashimi Salad: Fresh vegetables and assorted sashimi with a house sesame dressing
Octo-Wasabi: Pickled octopus with chopped wasabi stem and nori
Spicy Kimchi Poke: Diced fresh salmon sashimi, kimchi, cucumber, pickled yellow beets and onion, fresh Thai chilis, sliced seaweed, and green onion with Nome's original sesame poke sauce
Shrimp Udon Salad: Fresh vegetables with shrimp on a bed of udon noodles topped with a wasabi vinaigrette dressing
Seared Salmon Roll: Avocado, crab meat salad, asparagus, coleslaw, cucumber, and cream cheese topped with seared salmon, garlic mayo, honey mustard seeds, and crispy tapioca crackers
Japa-Burgers: Sliced rib eye meat sliders topped with tomato, spring mix, onion, smoky BBQ sauce, and house garlic mayo
Spicy Mac & Cheese: Macaroni with a blend of rich cheddar cheese, diced bacon, shrimp, and scallops
Honey Bread: Thick toast with butter, topped with honey, honey cream, vanilla ice cream, raspberries, and dusted cactus honey powder
Ordered some new dishes and some old favourites. Even though I have to eat healthy, I did still get to try everything, and I'd say the only flop of the bunch was the Spicy Kimchi Poke, which sounded great in theory but was way too vinegary in execution — to the point where it was like an assault to my tastebuds. It needs to be served with rice or bread or even a bed of lettuce to temper the intense sour flavour. I could only eat a tiny bit of this at a time, and even then, it was more so for the sake of not wasting it. (It was the least touched dish of the night.) I do also think that the Sashimi Salad could have had less dressing (it was literally drenched in sesame dressing, which kind of overwhelmed the flavours of the sashimi and the salad itself), but it was tasty overall. I'm always weary of mac and cheese at Asian or fusion restaurants because it can go wrong so easily, but the Spicy Mac & Cheese was surprisingly excellent; creamy and wonderfully cheesy with proper crispy edges and bits of bacon and chunks of meaty shrimp and scallops... I only allowed myself eat two bites 'cause I'm supposed to be eating healthy, but I could easily have had the whole bowl to myself. Of course, we had to end our dinner with the Honey Bread, which might just be my favourite restaurant dessert of all time. I'd take it over birthday cake any day.
