Wanted some Korean fried chicken today, so my friend Chelsea and I went to check out the highly-rated Mr. ChiMaek. Initially, the fried chicken options seemed really overpriced ($34 for one order), but we soon learned that one order includes a full chicken. (They said it's for two to three people, but honestly, there was so much chicken that we would've needed at least another two people to finish it.) All orders also come with a side of refillable pickled radish, which is pretty much the best accompaniment to fried chicken of all time. We decided to get the half and half fried chicken — half in regular spicy sauce and the other half in very spicy sauce. The meat itself is the ultimate fried chicken, in my opinion — the breading is crispy, light, and almost flaky, and the meat is tender and juicy (even the white meat). The regular spicy sauce isn't actually that spicy; there's a bit of a kick, but it's mostly tangy and sweet, so it's great for those who like honey garlic or sweet and sour sauces. I'd recommend this one for everybody. But the "very spicy" is no fucking joke, people. I felt like my mouth was on fire. I guess this is like the "suicide" spice level in the chicken wing world. (I don't know why it came as such a surprise, though. Everyone knows Koreans love their spice.) Even Chelsea, who always orders the spiciest foods and douses everything in hot sauce, thought it was too spicy. So if you feel like losing your tastebuds, or you already lost your tastebuds because you are addicted to insanely spicy foods, or you're a zombie in iZombie, the "very spicy" sauce is for you.
We ended up having to doggy bag more than half of the chicken because the portions were so big and we were about to burst out of our pants with food babies after four pieces each (each piece is about the size of two chicken wings). Also because we ordered the bacon kimchi cheese fries, which were so freaking tasty that we ended up scarfing it down in less than two minutes (could've used more kimchi, but they are very generous with the cheese and bacon). The whole experience was awesome and the service was incredible (really attentive, super nice, came by our table regularly to ask if we wanted refills of pickled radish or corn slaw, and when she saw that we were dying from the spice, she immediately came with extra cups of ice water). I'm definitely going back there for all my fried chicken cravings, and would recommend it to everyone.
