MAC Nocturnals: Lip Gloss Set in Coral

Yesterday, MAC released a new collection called Nocturnals, which features a variety of mini sets and is the third and final part of MAC's Holiday 2013 offerings. The packaging of this year's holiday collections are inspired by the elegance and geometric designs of 1920s Art Deco, as well as the lavish lifestyles of the Studio 54 era. Nocturnals consists of seven kits, and sees the release of three new and limited edition lip gloss sets. Each lip gloss set features three shades of Cremesheen Glass and one shade of Dazzleglass. Cremesheen Glasses come with doe-foot applicators and Dazzleglasses come with brush applicators; both formulas are vanilla-scented but taste-free. They are housed in special edition tubes with black caps embellished with white and gold, and matching secondary cardstock packaging. Each lip gloss set contains a total of 9.6 grams of product, and retails for $38.50.

Moth to Flame, On the Scene, Star Quality, and Night is Young

Moth to Flame is a beige-tinted clear base with white and silver glitter in the Dazzleglass formula. This is a permanent shade. The texture is lightweight but slightly tacky, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has low pigmentation and sheer colour pay-off. It is slightly darker and more beige than Bare Necessity, and lighter and less brown than Girl's Delight.
On the Scene is a medium warm peach in the Cremesheen Glass formula. This is a re-promoted shade from 2010's In the Groove collection, and is limited edition. The texture is lightweight and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has low-medium pigmentation and semi-sheer colour pay-off. It is slightly darker and more peach than Boy Bait and Fashion Whim.
Star Quality is a medium vibrant pinked coral in the Cremesheen Glass formula. This is a re-promoted shade from 2012's Reel Sexy collection, and is limited edition. The texture is lightweight and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium pigmentation and semi-opaque colour pay-off. It is more coral than Double Dare, and sheerer and more pink than Whoops! Pro Longwear Lipglass.
Night is Young is a medium vibrant slightly cool-toned red in the Cremesheen Glass formula. It is a new and limited edition. The texture is lightweight and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium pigmentation and semi-sheer to semi-opaque buildable colour pay-off. It is cooler and more red than Double Dare, and less cool-toned and less shimmery than Venetian Lustreglass.

I think this might be my favourite lip gloss set of the three that were released with Nocturnals. It's significantly different from the coral sets that have come out in the past few years, and I like the mix of more muted shades and much brighter ones. Plus, it's the only set of the three that actually contains a new shade. My main complaint is that Star Quality and Night is Young look relatively similar on the lips; one is only slightly redder than the other, and I felt that MAC could have released a shade that was maybe deeper or less bright. This set should be flattering on all skintones, though. As always, the holiday lip gloss sets in general are always a really good value. The Dazzleglasses in these sets actually have more product than their full-size counterparts (2.4 g vs. 1.9 g), and the Cremesheen Glasses are actually full-size (2.4 g). In total, you are getting $98 worth of lip gloss for $38.50! If you like the formulas included in this set and you like at least two of the shades, it's definitely worth getting.

    1. Haha, totally, right? I think you said the same thing when it was released with Reel Sexy, lol. I know many people associate corals with warmer weather, but I think it has just enough red in it to make it wearable all the time. :)

  2. Yea, there isn't enough definition between the two groups of shades here for me. Sounds like a good deal though for someone!

    1. I think so many people associate corals with summer that this set won't sell as well as the other two sets... And I agree; I think they should've put a mid-tone peach somewhere in there, like Richer, Lusher, instead of two bright reddish corals!
