MAC Beth Ditto: Nail Lacquers

Yesterday, MAC launched a new and limited edition collection in collaboration with Beth Ditto. It features a total of 24 products —13 of which are new and limited edition, five of which are re-promotes, and six of which are permanent. Beth Ditto sees the release of three new and limited edition shades of Nail Lacquer. They are packaged in regular cylindrical glass bottles with black rubberized lids. Each nail polish contains 10 ml of product, and retails for $19 each.

Life and Beth, Near Beth Experience, and Vagabondage

Life and Beth is a light-medium orange-peach in a Cream finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It goes on rather streaky due to its thicker consistency, and as a result, has a longer drying time and is prone to pulling. It has medium pigmentation and semi-opaque colour pay-off. I needed three medium coats to achieve full opacity. It is lighter than China Glaze's Peachykeen and Chanel's June.

Near Beth Experience is a light pastel yellow in a Cream finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It goes on very streaky due to its thicker consistency, and as a result, has a longer drying time and is prone to pulling. It has medium pigmentation and semi-opaque colour pay-off. Due to the streakiness, I needed four medium coats to achieve full opacity. It is similar to China Glaze's Lemon Fizz.

Vagabondage is a medium cool-toned pink with lavender undertones in a Cream finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has some streaking on the first coat, but goes on smoothly and evenly after that. It has medium-high pigmentation and semi-opaque colour pay-off. I needed two medium coats to achieve full opacity. It is darker and more purple than OPI's Pink Friday and Chanel's May.

Though these shades are very cute and appropriate for Spring and Summer, I just can't recommend any of them. With a $19 price tag, I expect these polishes to execute much, much better. MAC's nail polish has never been their strong suit, and many shades tend to under-perform — these are really no different. In fact, two of the three were a downright pain in the ass to use and were just ridiculously streaky. I feel like nail polish is something MAC really needs to work on, especially if they're going to tack on such a high price tag.

  1. Ugh, seriously. How come they don't know that? Don't they test these things out before mass-producing?

    1. I don't know. I mean, MAC's nail polishes didn't do well to begin with, which is why they discontinued the permanent range. But you'd think that given that they only have to produce them for limited edition collections, they'd make them better? I just feel like MAC needs to focus more on quality than quantity, which is a very common complaint with their monthly limited edition collections.

    3. Yeah, I know, it's boggling my mind that they're bringing back a nail polish range permanently. To be fair, they're going to add some really cool shades from past collections that were limited edition (like the shades from Venomous Villains!), but I just don't know how they think they're going to do better this time around!
