NYC (Winter 2011): Day 4, John's Pizzeria

on
Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Shawn and I decided to go for lunch at John's, which is known for their New York-style pizza. (I would take New York-style pizza over Chicago-style any day.) They have been argued to be one of the best places for pizza in New York, so we knew we had to check it out. I decided to get a small John's Traditional Pizza (minus tomato sauce), with Italian sausage on top (every topping is extra, from $2.50 to $3.00). And I can now say, without a doubt, that this is the best pizza I have ever eaten in my life – a huge feat, considering how much pizza I've eaten in the past 24 years. I've always thought brick-oven pizza was by far superior than other types of pizza, but this one takes the cake.

The crust is thin, but still substantial enough to carry plenty of toppings. And it's actually delicious on its own (no dip needed), not too crispy and not too chewy – it's not the type of crust that you just leave on your plate. The Italian sausage added a glorious flavour to the super-cheesy pie, and the cheese is pure mozzarella (not cheese blends) as the Italians originally intended pizza to have. What I like about John's is that they keep it simple; no dipping sauces, no cheese-filled crusts. And extra chili pepper flakes, oregano, or parmesan cheese on top is completely unnecessary. If you go to Manhattan, you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't try the pizza at John's.
