After landing in Tokyo at 6:50PM, going through customs, picking up our luggage, taking the train into the city, getting to our hotel from Tokyo Station, and checking in, it was already 9:30PM. Then we had to go to Shibuya Mark City to pick up our Japan SIM card, which brought us to 10:30PM. We were tired and hungry and most of the restaurants in Shibuya on a weekday night are already closed by then. But we found a ramen shop called Ichikakuya right by Shibuya Crossing that was still open and decided our search was over.
Shio ramen
Melon sodas
Shio ramen for me, miso ramen for Carmen, and melon sodas for both of us. You can actually pick the firmness of your noodles and amount of chicken fat to be added to your broth, but we opted for "normal" levels for both. The noodles are springy and perfectly thick, the broth is rich and flavourful, the chashu is soft and tender, and the soy-marinated soft-boiled egg is delightfully jammy on the inside. There's also nori sheets on the side and some green veg (it's like a cross between spinach and choy sum) on top to give the illusion of health. I'm no ramen connoisseur, but my taste buds were extremely pleased. A totally satisfying first meal in Tokyo.
