It's become tradition to celebrate my birthday with a tasting menu with Ronsee. So for my 32nd, I chose the award-winning one at Canis:
Everything I want in a tasting menu, really. Canis presents their dishes in a unique way, with varied textures and flavours from unexpected ingredients that work well together. Everything is executed beautifully and well-presented, and in a totally casual, non-pretentious environment. Standouts for me were the striped bass, short rib, and duck hearts, but there wasn't a single dud on the menu. And surprisingly not too expensive at $88 a head, considerably cheaper than some of the other tasting menus in downtown Toronto. It's a well-deserved spot at #15 of Canada's Top 100 restaurants. Would 100% recommend to anyone, special occasion or not. Honestly, despite the shitty weather, I had such a good evening. A spectacular dinner followed by a showing of Burn the Stage (which was fucking awesome, by the way, so no regrets on buying advance tickets for three showings!). What more could I ask for on my birthday?
Bread: Sourdough with whipped yogurt and homemade cream cheese and fried capers
Snack: Clams

Lobster with smoked potato and lovage
Short rib with sourdough miso and maitake
