Finally got around to trying out the ultra-hyped Shinta Japanese BBQ this evening with my friends Viv and Amanda. We weren't able to make a reservation because no one picked up the phone every time we called, but we managed to get seated right away when we got there at 6:00 (it's worth noting that within 30 minutes of getting there, the restaurant was completely packed with a wait line at the door — on a Wednesday, no less — so a reservation is definitely recommended for later/weekend seatings). Shinta is really known for their wagyu AYCE (the first in Toronto), but we didn't want to spend so much on dinner tonight (wagyu AYCE is $69.99, so we wanna save it for a special occasion) so we got the regular angus beef AYCE. Of course, their menu has more than just beef; we did get the prime kalbi short rib, toro beef, and marinated kalbi short rib, but we also ordered pork belly, pork sausages, marinated lamb shoulder cubes, garlic shrimp, mushrooms with garlic butter, enoki mushrooms, sweet corn, and zucchini, among other things. I was actually kinda surprised at the wide variety they had in both meats and vegetables. Everything was delicious, fresh, and high quality. Nicely presented, too. While the servers seemed a little disorganized due to some understaffing, all of them were very friendly and accommodating. I definitely need to go back for the wagyu AYCE. Not even sure if I can wait for a special occasion.
