I ventured up to Newmarket today to meet up with my friends Denise and Elisa, both of whom I haven't seen in over a year (we all used to work together). We spent the afternoon drinking coffee and shopping at Upper Canada Mall, but our real purpose for meeting so far north (well, for me) was to go for dinner at SnackMrkt. We chose a wide selection of items to feast on:
- Honey lime chicken tacos with jalapeños, iceberg lettuce, pico de gallo, and sour cream
- Mexican street corn salad with avocado, black beans, three cheese tortellini, smoked maple bacon, cotija cheese, scallions, and cilantro tossed in creamy chili lime dressing
- Baked potato gnocchi in a chimichurri cream sauce with smoked maple bacon, mozzarella, and gruyere cheese
- Sundried tomato pesto pizza with cherry peppers, bocconcini, arugula, and balsamic glaze
- Garlic shrimp and scallops with fresh chilies and grilled lemon
- Truffle mac and cheese in a creamy béchamel sauce with brie, Monterey Jack, cheddar, truffle oil, and jalapeño Cheetos
- Deep fried two-bite brownies drizzled with white chocolate sauce
The standout dishes of the evening were the chicken tacos and the gnocchi, but I definitely wanna go back to try out some of the other options like the Mediterranean sweet fries, tropical coconut chicken, and Gochujang meatballs. The whole idea behind SnackMrkt is, of course, serving snack-sized portions to try a wider variety of dishes, kinda of like tapas. It's actually very similar to the concept behind El Furniture Warehouse, but a little fancier and more curated, and not as filled with hipsters. Definitely worth going up to Newmarket for.
