Blunt is a dark cool golden brown finish in a Matte finish. This is a permanent shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is darker and more brown than Harmony, and lighter and more golden than Swiss Chocolate, and lighter and more golden than Film Noir.
Ven Conmigo is a medium neutral rosy mauve in a Matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium-high pigmentation and semi-opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is lighter than Blushbaby, lighter and warmer than Mocha, and more pink than Prism.
Like the Rihanna and Ellie Goulding blush duos before it, both of the shades in Techno Cumbia are soft, smooth, pigmented, and blendable, but because of the way they are manufactured (they have to take two separate pans and merge them together into one compact), there is a kind of invisible outer layer that makes the product seem stiff and dry initially. Blunt behaves as the permanent one usually does — that is, incredibly smooth and finely-milled and ultra-pigmented — but you will have to scrape the top layer of Ven Conmigo because there is a barrier on it that doesn't allow it to give off any pigment. I know because I initially swatched it with my finger and nothing was coming up. I took a tissue and scraped it and then — boom! — it soft and pigmented with great colour pay-off. I only wish that MAC had made these two blushes into separate compacts because one shade takes up 3/4 of the pan and the other only gets 1/4 of the pan, so you have to manipulate your blush brush to fit into it. That having been said, you do get 10 grams of blush in a single compact for only $34 (a regular MAC blush at 6 grams is already $27), and it's in special edition packaging.
I like that Techno Cumbia is different than the Rihanna and Ellie Goulding duos, both of which featured a bronzer with a much brighter blush colour. Selena's sister actually kept all of Selena's makeup and used them as references for this collection, so you'll notice that the tones and finishes of the whole collection are very '90s-inspired — literally the shades that Selena wore back then. Blunt is especially great for contouring on medium to dark skintones, and Ven Conmigo is great as a blush on fair to medium-dark skintones and as a soft highlighter on deep dark skintones. Both shades are matte and they are both neutral, which will appeal to a wider audience. As of today, all of the products from the Selena collection are sold out online from MAC and all official partners (which launched Selena last week), but you will still have a chance of grabbing them in select stores this Thursday if you live in Canada or the US. Call to make sure which locations near you are launching it, and then get ready to get there early because all locations are going to be expecting line-ups.
