Here's the video I took of Tegan and Sara at Downsview Park on July 6, performing "Closer," from their latest album, Heartthrob. This was their last song of their set, to absolutely no one's surprise. It was the first single released from Heartthrob, and is by far Tegan and Sara's most successful and popular single to date, a song that is now certified platinum in Canada. It was covered on Glee, for god's sake. A lot of die-hard Tegan and Sara fans were really critical of this song upon release because it was so different from any other songs from their other records, calling Tegan and Sara "mainstream" and "sell-outs." But I think a pop record was just something they naturally progressed toward — they've been in the industry for over a decade now, and we can't keep expecting them to push out whiny, angsty, indie-folk. While I do think this song is a tad overplayed now, I still love it and the sentiment behind it. As Tegan stated:
"Although I do imagine that this would be an okay song to make out to, all I intended was to write something sweet that reminded the listener of a time before complicated relationships, drama, and heartbreak. I was writing about my youth, a time when we got closer by linking arms and walking down our school hallway, or talked all night on the telephone about every thought or experience we'd ever had. It wasn't necessarily even about hooking up or admitting your feelings back then. In fact, that rarely happened. It was the anticipation of something maybe happening that was truly exciting and satisfying. We were perpetually getting closer, yet we rarely got physical with one another, if ever. These relationships existed in a state of sexual and physical ambiguity."
And with that, this is the last video I will post from this concert. Promise.
My sister, who is not into indie music at all, was like, "Hey, T&S are really popular now!" and I was like, "Noooooooooo!"
ReplyDeleteBut agree, recognition is due to these guys big time. Looks like it was a great concert!

DeleteIt was such a good concert, Liz! They're so good live. And, yes, it's their time to shine now. They've been indie darlings for so long! Heartthrob is such a catchy album, too; it's hard not to love. :)
