Tomorrow, MAC will be launching their collaboration with Selena in select stores across North America. Selena Quintanilla was a Grammy award-winning recording artist and singer from Texas who died from a gunshot wound in 1995. Called the 'Queen of Tejano music,' "her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine named her the 'top Latin artist of the '90s' and the 'best selling Latin artist of the decade.' She also ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all-time and is credited for catapulting a music genre into the mainstream market."

This collection was curated with Selena's sister, Suzette, who was "inspired by the devotion of all those who continue to be touched by the young legend 20 years on from her untimely passing." There is a total of 14 products in this collection, of which 10 are new and limited edition and four are re-promotes in special deco packaging. Selena sees the launch of five new and limited edition eyeshadows. They are housed in a special edition royal purple pots with Selena's signature in a lavender-grey on the lid. Each eyeshadow contains a total of 1.5 grams of product, and retails for $20.50. Due to the special edition nature of this collection, these will not be redeemable as a free product in the Back to MAC recycling program.

Clockwise from bottom left: No Me Queda Mas, Missing My Baby, Fotos Y Recuerdos, Selena, and Is It the Beat

No Me Queda Mas, Missing My Baby, Fotos Y Recuerdos, Selena, and Is It the Beat

No Me Queda Mas is a medium warm dusty brown in a Matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is lighter than Charcoal Brown, cooler than Soft Brown, and darker than Wedge.
Missing My Baby is a light-medium beige-pink in a Matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is lighter than Malt, darker than Yogurt, and darker and more pink than Orb.
Fotos Y Recuerdos is a medium warm brightened coral pink in a Satin finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a slightly drier, thinner texture, so it has a tendency to go on dusty and patchy. It has medium pigmentation and semi-sheer to semi-opaque buildable colour pay-off. It does take some effort to blend out, but it can be layered up easily. It is lighter than Sushi Flower, more pink than Free to Be, and more pink and more matte than Fashion's Field Day.
Selena is a medium-dark warm brightened magenta-purple with a pearlized sheen in a Veluxe Pearl finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is darker and more purple than Stars 'n' Rockets, more pink and more pearlized than Crème de Violet, and cooler and more purple than Stylishly Merry.
Is It the Beat is a deep-dark cool blue-black in a Matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is more blue than Carbon, darker and more blue than Typographic, and more black than Nehru.

All the eyeshadows here are really impressive in formulation with the exception of Fotos Y Recuerdos, which has a thinner texture and sheerer pigmentation. I do recommend using a good eye base with it for a smoother application, but that having been said, the sheerer colour pay-off actually works to its advantage because it ends up being a surprisingly wearable transition shade for warm eye looks. Each of the other four shadows are fantastic in formula and are amazingly flattering on a multitude of skintones. No Me Queda Mas, Missing My Baby, and Is It the Beat are all great workhorse shades that can be worn with anything and everything. Is It the Beat is especially impressive as a black shade; it's much smoother and more pigmented than Carbon and more of a true black than Typographic (which is being phased out with the rest of the Matte2 shades), so it's great to smoke out with or use with a brush as a liner. Selena is a stunner of a purple shade that will look great with both warm and cool tones, and there's nothing too similar to it in MAC's permanent range, either. MAC and Selena's sister really did a brilliant job of curating these shades — they are great shades separately but work together cohesively while also reflecting Selena's aesthetic.

As of today, all of the products from the Selena collection are sold out online from MAC and all official partners, but you will still have a chance of grabbing them in select stores tomorrow if you live in Canada or the US. Call to make sure which locations near you are receiving it, and then get ready to get there early because all locations are going to be expecting line-ups.
