Wanting a little afternoon snack, we decided to make a pit stop at Taiyaki Wakaba, a 70-year-old taiyaki shop that just so happens to be across the street from our hotel.
Taiyaki
It's small and grungy, but they sell the most delicious, piping hot, crispy, golden, anko-packed, fish-shaped pastries for only ¥190 a piece (!!!). You can actually see them make these right at the front of the store — one guy mans the fish-shaped molds which he flips onto a little conveyor belt when they're fully crisp, another guy cuts the burnt bits off the sides to make them look pretty, and then the cashier lady carefully bags them to order. If the line-up of businessmen (one of whom bought two taiyaki to put in his briefcase for later and one to eat outside the shop, smart man), middle-aged ladies, and local seniors are any indication, this is the place to get taiyaki.
