Dining Out: A Super Belated Birthday Dinner at Azyun Restaurant

You know what's truly delightful? Belated birthday dinners. My friend Iris had actually planned to take me out for dinner the weekend right after my birthday, but I had gotten a bad cold and I didn't want to risk getting her and her family sick, so we postponed it. But it was totally worth it, because I got to celebrate my birthday again (quite literally a month later) and also finally — finally! — tried Azyun after four years.

Chilled Noodles

Marinated Eggplant

Crab Sushi Rice Toast

Truffle Fried Rice

10-Hour Slow Roasted Beef Brisket

Carp Caviar Risotto

We decided to get the set menu for two to try more variety of their dishes, which I highly recommend. For Option #1, we went for the Chilled Noodles with chili oil and sesame and the Marinated Eggplant with sesame vinaigrette; for Option #2, we chose the Crab Sushi Rice Toast with marinated zucchini, carrot and crab salad, chili and uni aioli, sesame, lettuce, radish, and nori; for Option #3, we decided on the 10-Hour Slow Roasted Beef Brisket with blackened caramelized onions, smoked miso beef jus, and house marinade; and finally, for Option #4, we got the Truffle Fried Rice with mushroom medley, blistered cherry tomatoes, crispy shallots, and a soft-poached egg. And because we didn't want FOMO, we also ordered the Carp Caviar Risotto (with saffron sushi rice, scallops, clams, mussels, uni butter, conch, nori, and tuna floss) because we were really debating between this and the Truffle Fried Rice for Option #4.

Everything was incredible: the Chilled Noodles and Marinated Eggplant were both light and refreshing, perfect for opening our appetites; the Crab Sushi Rice Toast was a symphony of flavours and textures between the creamy crab salad and the crunchy rice toast; the Beef Brisket was as flavourful, tender, and melt-in-your-mouth as you can get; and the Carp Caviar Risotto was creamy and spectacularly fragrant, full of uni flavour in each bite. But the Truffle Fried Rice was truly a triumph. As someone who is indifferent to rice in general, this was easily the best fried rice I have ever eaten in my life. The flavour is incredibly pronounced —  there is absolutely no mistaking that there is truffle in this — and so aromatic that both Iris and I made "MMMM!" sounds after every single bite.

Happy belated birthday to me, indeed!
