Feeling fancy this evening, Chelsea, Braden, and I went to Kiu for dinner. The last time we went to Kiu was 5 years ago for Chelsea's 24th birthday, so I was curious to see if their quality is as good as I remember it. We decided to split a platter of assorted oshi sushi and the giant tokusen bara chirashi don (that includes an entire bowl of ikura on top), and I'm happy to report that their food is still incredible. Unfortunately, everything on their menu has also significantly increased in price, even taking into account pandemic inflation, as our bill came to over $60 per person after tax and tip. (And we didn't have any alcohol.) However, it's to be expected — you go to Kiu for bougie sushi. I remember why I've stored this restaurant under the "special occasion" category now.
Still, what was most disappointing was actually the service. I know they just re-opened again for dining in, but after our server brought our food, she left and never came back. Not to check up on us, not to refill our water, not even to give us a dessert menu. And it definitely wasn't busy enough for a server to just abandon us like that. We literally spent 10 minutes trying to flag her down just to get the bill. (Sorry, but if you work for tips at a restaurant where the food is so expensive, shouldn't you give better service?) So is the food worth it? Yeah, it's excellent. Fresh ingredients, decent portions, great flavours, fantastic craftsmanship. But the service definitely left something to be desired.
