Photolog 2021: Day 220 of 365

Met up with my friends Viv and Amanda for our "quarterly meet-up" today to have a belated birthday lunch for Viv. (Since the pandemic, we've literally only been able to see each other once every three months.) Viv was craving dim sum and Amanda had never tried it before and obviously I am always down for dim sum, so we decided to make reservations at Viv's and my favourite dim sum place, Casa Victoria. A good call, too, because when we got there, it was a (socially distanced) full house.

Steamed shrimp dumplings (har gow)

Steamed BBQ pork buns (cha siu bao)

Pan-fried turnip patties (lo bak go)

Steamed shrimp and yellow chive rice noodle rolls (cheung fun)

Steamed shrimp and pork dumplings (siu mai)

Deep-fried taro and pork croquettes (wu gok)

Since it was Amanda's first time trying dim sum, Viv and I obviously had to introduce her to our favourites and some classic crowd-pleasers. What I always find noticeable at Casa Victoria is the portion sizes and freshness of all the dishes compared to other dim sum places. The har gow are literally twice the size of the typical dumpling, and the shrimp have a fantastic snappy bite. The turnip patties are actually crusted with sesame seeds here (I have never seen this anywhere else, actually) which adds an amazing crunchy texture and a lovely sweetness. In fact, Amanda loved the turnip patties so much, she asked if we could order seconds. (The answer is always yes.) Suffice it to say, we have successfully converted Amanda into a dim sum lover.
