Korean corn dogs have been all the rage recently and I had been wanting to try them for a while but there aren't a lot of places in Toronto that even sell corn dogs, let alone Korean corn dogs. It wasn't until I saw a Toronto-based food influencer post about Chungchun Rice Dog that I even knew I could get them here. In fact, Chungchun has been getting so much hype recently that they've opened up several new locations across Canada in the span of half a year. Ying and I went to their latest opening in Scarborough (it is brand new; their grand opening was on March 12), which also happens to be the closest one to us. If the consistent line-up is any indication, Korean corn dogs are insanely popular and in high demand here. (Seriously, Ying and I were at that plaza for two hours and there was at least 10 people waiting outside at ALL TIMES. On a MONDAY.)
Now, what's the difference between a corn dog and a Korean corn dog? Well, firstly, Korean corn dogs are not technically corn dogs. In fact, the batter is made out of rice, which has a chewier, fluffier consistency and a super-crispy exterior. Secondly, it isn't greasy at all. Not even a little oil stain can be found on the paper boxes. Thirdly, these dogs are HUGE. Easily double the size of a regular corn dog; triple the size of a Pogo. Thirdly, the variety is AMAZING. Chungchun offers 11 different types of Korean corn dogs; Ying and I decided to try six of them:
- Mozzarella Cheese Hotdog with Sweet Thai Chili Sauce
- Gamsung (Potato) Hotdog with Spicy Mayo
- Chungchun Original Hotdog with Ketchup and Mustard
- Volcano Hotdog
- Ramen Chips Hotdog
- Cheddar Cheese Hotdog with Honey Butter Powder
Incredible. Game changing. A food that was initially only found at fairs, carnivals, or amusement parks has been upgraded, powered-up, and made available all year round. And they are DELICIOUS. I mean, you can't go wrong with a deep-fried hot dog on a stick, but the texture and flavours of these are magnificent. My favourites are the Gamsung Hotdog and the Original, but you honestly can't go wrong with any of them. And you can customize them with different sauces and seasonings, too, so the flavour profiles are endless. (Surprisingly, the Honey Butter seasoning worked beautifully with the Cheddar Cheese Hotdog, and I think it would've been excellent with the Mozzarella Cheese Hotdog as well.) Ying and I were really ambitious to get six — the average person will absolutely get full with two — but we found out that they don't lose their integrity over time. In fact, just pop them in the oven for a few minutes and they're just as good. Seriously.
Anyway, we'll be back. Like, ASAP. We still have another five hotdogs to try.
