About a month ago, my friend Tuta started her own custom cake business, so I asked if she could make me a BTS-themed cake one day. She asked me what colour scheme I'd want (purple, obviously), what decorations I'd want (the BTS logo with a galaxy design), and how many people I'd want it for (two or three). I let her decide the rest, including picking out the flavour, the icing, the design of the body, the layers, etc. And she surprised me with the most beautiful, purple ombré, galaxy-inspired, BTS-themed, three-layer dalgona coffee cake, complete with fondant "lollipops" that say "Happy birthday Denise," as her birthday gift to me. She said she decided on dalgona coffee flavour because she knows my love addiction to coffee (something we have in common as we always used to grab coffee for each other at work) and because dalgona coffee was created in Korea and she wanted to bring the whole BTS theme full circle.

I cut the cake last night for dessert with Ronsee and Ying after dinner, and let me tell you, all three of us were amazed with this cake. The cake is made of a not-too-sweet coffee-flavoured sponge cake that has a beautiful firm but moist texture; the frosting — which is in between the layers of the cake as well as coating the outer part of the cake — is made of a sweeter coffee-flavoured buttercream that has a silky smooth consistency (in tandem with the coffee sponge, it really tasted like a dalgona coffee); and the marshmallow fondant, which is what the logo is made out of, has the perfect pliable texture that isn't stiff or thick like store-bought fondants.
It is, quite frankly, my dream cake. Even Ying, who used to help her husband make cakes for his family's bakery, was impressed with the quality of the cake and the painstaking effort it takes to make a singular cake like this (mass production of cakes is much easier because you can make big batches of batter, frosting, etc., but it is extremely tedious to make just enough for one small cake, especially if there are multiple colours involved). It's doubly impressive coming from someone who just started baking this year. (Tuta got really bored during this pandemic and found her new calling.) I will 100% be ordering from her for any and all special occasions.
Y'all, I had a great birthday this year.
