After doing some Googling on where to take my mom out for her birthday dinner, we ended up going to Carmelina this evening.
Mushroom soup
First of all, they start you off with toasty focaccia bread, and our server asked if we liked hot peppers so I obviously said yes, and she brought over a bowl of pickled hot peppers in chili oil and, WOW, it was so freaking good with the bread that I wish they sold that stuff in jars 'cause I would've bought two right then and there. (Listen, if the free stuff is already that good, you know their menu is going to be phenomenal.) Both my mom and I decided to get the Soup of the Day, which was a smooth, velvety mushroom soup that had the perfect amount of richness and creaminess. Every spoonful was so full of delectable mushroom flavour that I almost forgot how fattening it was. (WORTH IT.)
Spaghettini alla Francoise
Speaking of which, for my main, I ordered the Spaghettini alla Francoise — sautéed lobster, sea scallops, tiger shrimps, bell peppers, and julienne of carrots in a white wine and brandy sauce with a touch of cream — and I swear, it was one of the best seafood pastas I've ever had in my life. I know, those are some fighting words, right? But it had an excellent amount of super fresh seafood (including a lobster tail, not bits of shredded up meat that makes you wonder if it's real lobster), perfectly cooked noodles, beautiful flavours co-mingling in one of the most beautifully rich sauces I've ever tasted, infused with lobster in every bite... A pasta dream, I tell you.
Italian almond cake
Finally, for dessert, we decided to share the almond cake (I asked for a birthday candle so my mom could make a wish), and it was the perfect ending to our meal — full of almond flavour, not too sweet, with sponge cake that's not too dense. The service was also excellent — granted, it was a slow Monday night — but our server was attentive, informative, and super nice. My mom and I rarely agree on anything, but we both loved our experience here, to the point where my mom decided to take her friends here for their birthdays. The real question is, why haven't I come here before?
