I'd been thinking about the Asian fusion brunch at Daan Go Cafe since last week, so I made it a mission to try it this afternoon with Chelsea. We got there around 2:30 PM 'cause they stop serving their brunch menu at 4:00 PM. If the full house at 2:30 PM on a random Thursday is any indication, the hype surrounding Daan Go Cafe is real.
Matcha latte and regular latte (with mini macarons)
Eggs Benedict with satay corned beef on salted yolk brioche
Eggs Benedict with Singapore chili crab cakes on salted yolk brioche
We ordered drinks first — a regular latte for me and a matcha latte for Chelsea, which are served with the cutest mini macarons — and after thoroughly perusing the menu and asking our server to see what was most popular, we ended up ordering two different Eggs Benedicts to share. What separates Daan Go Cafe from other brunch places is that you can customize your Eggs Benedict with your choice of both bread and protein. We got one with the signature 72-hour satay corned beef and one with the Singapore chili crab cakes, both on salted yolk brioche buns.
All Eggs Benedicts come with two freshly poached eggs topped with lemongrass hollandaise sauce (which has a gorgeous aroma — light and fresh with a hint of citrus), plus a little bowl of fresh fruit, a strawberry-banana smoothie shot, and the most perfect seasoned potatoes I have ever tasted at any restaurant, ever. (Seriously. Usually potatoes or home fries that are served as side dishes are like an afterthought, just something to make you fuller, but the ones here are almost as good as the main dish itself.) Both dishes were phenomenal — the brioche is fluffy and soft but stands up to all the toppings without getting too soggy, the corned beef is juicy and tender and beautifully flavoured, and the crab cakes are soft with a fantastic flaky texture and the perfect amount of spice. Quite frankly, I can't see any combination of the Eggs Benedict being short of amazing here.
"3:15"
"Mr. Carrottail"
"Firma"
Of course, we can't go to Daan Go Cafe and not get cake. I mean, it's literally called Daan Go (which translates to cake in Chinese). So we ordered not one, not two, but three different desserts because we were feeling particularly ambitious today:
All three were totally different in textures, aesthetics, and flavour profiles, but the unanimous favourite was the 3:15 cake, which just had the perfect flavour combination and consistency (an airy sponge with a light, smooth cream). Still, you can't go wrong with any of the desserts here, and there's something for everyone and every mood. (I haven't forgotten my mission to keep visiting until I try every single cake on the menu.) And honestly, where else can you get such excellent and unique brunch food and renowned (and INSANELY ADORABLE) desserts in the same place?

- 3:15 — Milk tea mousse, Ovaltine crumb, Viet coffee cremeux, and tea chiffon
- Mr. Carrotail — Carrot cake, dulce mascarpone cream, and pecan chocolate in the shape of a bunny
- Firma — Banana cream, chocolate almond sponge, salted caramel, and wafer crumb designed like a cactus garden
