Chelsea and I were craving tonkatsu for dinner, so we decided to try out Katsuya, a restaurant chain that is solely dedicated to katsu and has consistently good ratings. We decided to get the cheese crabmeat croquettes to start, and then we each ordered the original pork loin katsu. The meat was surprisingly tender (pork loin can be really dry because there's such low fat content, but this was still juicy with a satisfying mouthfeel); the most excellent airy, golden, crispy skin; and a lovely sweet-savoury gravy that accented the meat perfectly (as opposed to some other sauces, which can overwhelm the flavour of the meat). The croquettes were also amazing, with a good ratio of potato to crabmeat to cheese, coated in a tasty crunchy batter, and topped with the most addictive creamy tartar-mayo sauce. I only wish we had more stomach space so we could try more of their dishes. (Honey butter fries? Karaage? Carbonara udon? Brick cheese katsu? Yes, please!) Our server was really lovely as well; super-sweet, attentive, and cheerful. 100% recommend. Will definitely come back when the tonkatsu craving hits!
