Went for dinner after work with Maegan at Deer Garden Signatures this evening. It's a make-your-own-noodle-soup restaurant (a.k.a. heaven). I'd heard of it before because I have friends who are addicted to this place specifically, but it was my first time going there. Both Maegan and I opted for the Malay laksa soup base with udon noodles; I chose luncheon meat and beef brisket for my toppings and she chose pumpkin and beef slices (all bowls come with cabbage and mushroom slices). They aren't pretty to look at, but they are de-freaking-licious. Good portion size, too, and a drink is included in the $11.25 price tag (I paid an extra $1.25 for an HK-style iced lemon tea, which is normally $2.75). Compared to Chef Papa, which has the same concept, I would say that I prefer Deer Garden's Malay laksa soup because it's creamier, richer, and more flavourful. However, Chef Papa offers Japanese-style broths and noodles (like ramen and pork bone broths) which Deer Garden doesn't have, so I guess I'd go to one over the other depending on mood (and also location, 'cause one's in Markham and the other is in Scarborough). Regardless, Deer Garden is a noodle soup lover's paradise and I highly, highly recommend the Malay laksa broth, which has just the right amount of spice and sweetness.
