This week's Saturday Nine:
- David Lee Roth does a lot of jumping in this video. He credits his flashy moves to his study with marital artist Benny Urquidez. Have you ever tried karate, judo, or jiu-jitzu? I did judo at school when I was really young, maybe 6 or 7, and then I took kung fu lessons when I was 11. I did it for like, a year, and then gave up because as it turns out, I am not good at martial arts.
- Dave claims to be fluent in Spanish. Say something "en español." Um... Yo quiero Taco Bell?
- Dave appeared as himself in an episode of The Sopranos, playing poker with Tony Soprano. Are you a good poker player? I haven't played enough poker to gauge whether I'd be good or not. I know the basics of the game and my brother and I played poker for candy when we were kids, but that's the extent of it for me. I've never played it seriously or for money. At casinos, blackjack is my game.
- Though known for his prowess on the guitar, Eddie Van Halen wrote the opening of this song at the keyboard when he was still new to the synthesizer. When do you recently venture outside your comfort zone? Was it a success? As a leader of a team of people, I have to step outside my comfort zone everyday, whether it's dealing with a difficult client or taking disciplinary action with an employee. Today, I had to have a serious discussion with one of my artists about her productivity at work while maintaining professionalism and being rational. As it turns out, I'm pretty good at it. So I'd say it was a success.
- Eddie's older brother Alex is the Van Halen drummer and his son, Wolfie, began touring with the band in 2007. Have you ever worked with a family member? Not in any serious capacity. I did have to run a website with my brother for a charity organization when I was 14 or 15 (I did the graphic and web design and he did the database programming and updating the site), so we technically had to work together for that, but that's about it. But I remember we had a lot of arguments over it, and I learned from then that I wouldn't work well with or for family members. There's too much conflict, and I don't want that with family. My dad was an employee of one of my uncles who owned a computer hardware company in the 1990s, and they had such a serious conflict that they didn't talk to each other for a long, long time. So, yeah. Work is work. Home is home.
- Van Halen's first manger was Marshall Berle. Mr. Berle's uncle was Milton Berle. Does the name Milton Berle mean anything to you? Not really. I know he was an actor but I've never seen any of his work.
- In 1984, when this song was popular, AT&T/Bell Telephone was broken up into 24 separate companies. Today, who is your phone provider? Fido.
- Also in 1984, Michael Jackson was severely burned while filming a Pepsi commercial. Would we find any Pepsi in your kitchen right now? No, I don't like Pepsi. You'll find Diet Coke and Canada Dry ginger ale in my kitchen.
- Random question: Have you ever been so angry that you kicked or hit an inanimate object? Nah. I'd rather not hurt my foot or ruin my shoe, both of which would piss me off more.
