Last year, MAC introduced their new customer loyalty program in North America called MAC Select. MAC describes MAC Select as their "prestigious members-only program for the makeup-obsessed. The more you purchase, the more covetable privileges you earn and the higher you climb our three elite tiers." You can read all about the program and its three tiers here, but essentially, if you shop at MAC at all, whether online or in their freestanding stores, it's worth joining. It's free and the more you spend in a calendar year, the more perks you get. (MAC Select is only available in the US and Canada right now, but it will be rolled out internationally over the next year.) A perk of MAC Select is that there will be "exclusive members-only products," which will all be limited edition. All you have to do to purchase these products is become a member; you can sign up for it at any time online or in any MAC Store. (Note: this program is not available at partnered locations.)
Today, MAC has released two Extra Dimension duo compacts exclusively for Select members. Each compact contains one Extra Dimension Blush and one Extra Dimension Skinfinish. They are housed in rectangular black mirrored compacts featuring the MAC Select logo print, with matching secondary card stock packaging. Both the blush and the highlighter are embossed with the MAC Select logo print as well. Each Extra Dimension Duo Compact contains a total of 10 grams of product (5 grams each for the blush and the highlighter), and retails for $42. They will be available at MAC Stores and on MAC's website in North America only.
Select 1: Superb and Selected
Select 1: Superb and Selected
Superb is a medium warm rosy patina beige with a metallic sheen in a luminous pearlized finish. This is a permanent shade. It has a lightweight, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. There is nothing similar to this in MAC's permanent range; it's darker, bronzier, and more metallic than Soft and Gentle Mineralize Skinfinish.
Selected is a medium warm muted rosy beige with a soft sheen in a satin finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a lightweight, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is lighter and more muted than Mocha, softer than Blushbaby, and more pink than Warm Soul.
Select 2: Preferred and Private Reserved
Select 2: Preferred and Private Reserved
Preferred is a light-medium muted champagne beige with a metallic sheen in a luminous pearlized finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a lightweight, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is less yellow than Oh, Darling!, slightly lighter and less gold than Beaming Blush, and more metallic and more golden than Soft and Gentle.
Private Reserved is a medium warm pinked peach with a soft sheen in a satin finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a lightweight, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is darker and brighter than Fairly Precious, more muted than Just a Pinch, and softer and more pinked than Peaches.
Both face compacts are absolutely stunning, with Select 1 one designed for medium to dark complexions and Select 2 designed for light to medium-dark complexions. If these look somewhat familiar, it's because MAC released two variations of these compacts last year for their
holiday collection. They were widely successful due to the popularity of the Extra Dimension texture and the portability of the compacts, so it was only a matter of time before MAC released them again. I've always been a huge fan of the Extra Dimension formula in all forms (eyeshadows, blushes, highlighters) for its lightweight, super-smooth, ultra-silky texture, incredible pigmentation and blendability — and these are no different. (Please note that due to the Select logo embossing on the powders, the pigment won't catch on well to brushes until getting past the top "sealed" layer — I would gently swipe the tops of the powders with a tissue or finger before dipping a brush into them so they give off the full colour pay-off that Extra Dimension products are known for.) On that note, the Extra Dimension Blushes in these compacts have a very different finish than the
permanent singles; these have a satin finish with a soft sheen that sits smoothly on the skin and doesn't emphasize skin texture. The Extra Dimension Skinfinishes, however, look and apply the same as always with a very high-shine, metallic, almost wet-looking glow that can be buffed out to the most luminous, dewy finish. If you already have the majority of MAC's Extra Dimension Skinfinishes, you can probably skip these, but both compacts are really cute, excellent for travel, and look stunning on the skin.
