This Thursday, MAC will be launching their major fall collaboration collection with Star Trek, the American science fiction franchise created by Gene Roddenberry that encompasses seven TV series, 13 films, numerous multi-format games, and a large library of novels and comics. In honour of its 50th anniversary, MAC has teamed up with Star Trek to create an exclusive makeup collection: "Spanning half a century, Star Trek and its loyal fans cross generations, influencing ideas and aesthetics of gender, race, and intergalactic potential. As the sci-fi saga continues, delight in the beauty of exploration as MAC and Star Trek's latest cinema generation join forces in an exclusive makeup collaboration of cosmically charged hues."

MAC Star Trek will include a total of 24 products, and see the release of three shades of a brand new and limited edition face powder formula called Trip the Light Fantastic Powder, which MAC describes as "a metamorphosing powder that transforms skin upon first contact. With swirls of complementing colours and luminous pearls, it provides sheer luminosity, is creamy to the touch, blends effortlessly." They are housed in special edition black compacts with a clear lid and the Star Trek logo in metallic silver, as well as matching secondary packaging. Each Trip the Light Fantastic Powder contains a total of 6.5 grams of product and retails for $39.50.

Luna Luster, Highly Illogical, and Strange New Worlds

Luna Luster is a light warm pinked beige with silver shimmer in a pearlized finish. This is a new and limited edition product. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium pigmentation and semi-sheer to semi-opaque buildable colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is warmer and more shimmery than Lightscapade Mineralize Skinfinish, and warmer and less shimmery than Soft and Gentle Mineralize Skinfinish.
Highly Illogical is medium-dark warm coppery bronze with champagne shimmer in a pearlized finish. This is a new and limited edition product. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium pigmentation and semi-sheer to semi-opaque buildable colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is more brown and less shimmery than Cheeky Bronze Mineralize Skinfinish, and more copper than Sweet as Cocoa Powder Blush.
Strange New Worlds is medium warm orange copper with gold shimmer in a pearlized finish. This is a new and limited edition product. It has a soft, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium pigmentation and semi-sheer to semi-opaque buildable colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is more orange and less shimmery than Gold Deposit Mineralize Skinfinish, and more orange than Sunbasque Powder Blush.

These are definitely the stars of the Star Trek collaboration, and there's a shade for everyone. I don't want to categorize these because they can be used in multiple different ways: as soft luminous highlighters, as all over face powders for an incandescent finish, as bronzers for illuminated warmth, or on the cheeks as muted glowy blushes. They're not as metallic as MAC's Mineralize Skinfinishes, but they do have a pearlized finish, so there is definitely an illuminating aspect to these powders, but they're not so shiny that they emphasize skin texture. I have found that over time, they give skin a very soft focus finish, so skin looks smoother and clearer and more naturally radiant. (They also look far more impressive on the face than in simple hand/arm swatches, so definitely try them on in person!) The three shades will suit a variety of skintones as well, so it's not like some other collections where the colours are only suited toward very fair or very dark complexions. Whether you're a Trekker, a Trekkie, or just a plain ol' makeup junkie, these are all worth checking out. 'Cause you know that these are gonna show up on eBay for triple the price in a few weeks.

  1. I'm not even a Trekkie but feel slightly disappointed by the packaging!

......And then I just got the part about it aligning with the new movie, not the classic stuff. Okay then. :)

    1. Actually, I agree with you; the packaging is quite disappointing. It's not bad, but it's just not that special. I wish they had made them look more different than MAC's standard packaging. Like, these powders just look like the old MSFs. They would've been cool in like, matte chrome compacts with the Star Trek logo etched on the lids. I totally would've paid more for that kind of packaging.
