This Thursday, MAC will be launching a new product called Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour, which is described as "a lip colour that provides a splash of colour in a liquid-suede finish that lingers." (It is only available online right now.) There is a total of 15 shades, all of which will be added to the permanent range. They are housed in clear tubes with MAC's classic lipstick caps featuring a new pointed sponge applicator with a hole in the centre that holds the product for full saturated colour in one swipe. Each Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour contains 5 ml of product, and retails for $24. As these are a different formulation with a different price point, they are not redeemable in the Back to MAC recycling program.

Lady-Be-Good is a light-medium peachy beige in a suede-matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. It has a lightweight, mousse-like texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is more peach than Cherish, darker and more peach than Honeylove, and lighter and warmer than Velvet Teddy.
Back in Vogue is a light-medium muted peach in a suede-matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. It has a lightweight, mousse-like texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is more orange than Runway Hit, more peach than Kinda Sexy, and darker and more peach than Peachstock.
Rich & Restless is a medium brightened peach-coral in a suede-matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. It has a lightweight, mousse-like texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is brighter and warmer than Tropic Tonic, warmer and more matte than Vegas Volt, and lighter and more muted than Morange.
Fashion Legacy is a medium-dark vibrant warm orange-red in a suede-matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. It has a lightweight, mousse-like texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is darker than Lady Danger, darker and slightly more red than Dangerous, and darker and more red than So Chaud.

A lot of people have been like, "Oh, MAC is finally coming out with liquid lipsticks." Except what they don't realize is that MAC came out with liquid lipsticks over a decade ago (in a formula called Pro Longwear Lipcolour) and no one cared about it because it wasn't on trend until this past year. They have been slowly phasing out Pro Longwear Lipcolour over the past couple years (if you are a fan of this formula, grab your favourite shades before they're gone forever) to make room for the new Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours. Now, the biggest difference between the two is texture; whereas the Pro Longwear Lipcolour had a runnier, thinner consistency, the Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours have more of a lightweight mousse-like texture. They are slightly drying in the way that long-wearing matte products are, but there is some cushion to them that keeps them from being uncomfortable to wear (I actually find these more comfortable to wear than MAC's regular Retro Matte lipsticks).

They are transfer-proof and water-resistant for the most part so they do wear very well (most of them wear about eight hours before fading), but they come off with oil, so obviously if you're eating something particularly greasy, the lip product will fade. That having been said, I find these easy to re-apply or touch-up without streaking or bunching or cracking, or without lifting the initial layer of colour on the lip. Most of these shades seem to be self-levelling, so even though they may appear streaky at first, they even out during the dry-down period (which is about 30 seconds to a minute). The applicator is actually what sets this apart for me, personally; it is a short, flexible, pointed-tip sponge applicator with a hole in the centre of it to hold on to product, which allows for a precise, smooth, even, and fully opaque application of colour with excellent control. MAC came out with a nice initial range of shades that encompasses light to dark and muted to bright — I'm glad to see some more classic, wearable shades versus ultra-trendy, seasonal shades — so that there's something for everyone, regardless of age or skintone.

  1. I don't know why but the design of these tubes crack me up. But the range of colours look good!

And if the old Pro Longwear was double-ended with clear gloss option, I had one of those back in the day. I closed the cap so hard that no one could open it, so it went back to MAC a little earlier than it was supposed to, lol.

    1. Because they look like vibrators, LOL.

And yes, the Pro Longwear Lipcolour was the double-ended one!

  2. It's a bit sad that even though MAC brings out interesting products, it's always the other brands that get the credit. Remember Bobbi Brown's Sterling Nights sparkly eye shadows? That was almost the same as the Mineralized eyeshadow colours that MAC had for Venomous Villains and those were panned for being too sparkly. I'm not a huge fan of matte lipsticks, but am keen on the Velvetease lip pencils though. Have been avoiding the MAC Pro store here in Berlin as I'm inspired by Liz and am trying to finish more products before buying anything new, but I might cave eventually :)

    1. I find MAC to be one of the most forward-thinking, innovative cosmetics companies. I totally agree that other brands get the recognition for a lot of products that MAC had already came out with. Another good example is the Brow Wiz by Anastasia Beverly Hills. MAC came out with Eye Brows (a very similar thin mechanical brow pencil) years and years ago, but people only talk about the Brow Wiz.

Matte is just on trend right now, which is why all these brands are coming out with all things matte. I do like the look of matte lipsticks but they can get really drying. The only finishes I won't wear are frost or metallic because they just seem to be a dated look to me, and I don't find them to be flattering. Did you get any of the Velvetease pencils?

Haha, true, I'm sure you have more than your fair share of MAC product. And it's hard to keep up because MAC releases so many collections. I'm trying to avoid Sephora right now, but it's getting really hard now that I'm seeing so many spring previews. :P
