NYC — Spring 2014: Beauty Haul

Oh, yes. You knew this was gonna happen. I did an intense amount of shopping while I was in New York, and yes, the majority of my money was spent on — what else? — cosmetics. On our first full day in the city, my mom and I went to Macy's Herald Square to take a gander, and the first thing I did was make a bee-line to the Tom Ford counter.

Tom Ford Lip Color in Violet Fatale and Pink Dusk

I had planned on getting two lipsticks and there were several shades that I'd had my eye on from seeing online swatches, but I needed to try them on in person before making a final decision. I wanted to get one shade to wear all the time and works well with everything, and another shade that would be bright and fun and more in-your-face. I was tempted by some of the Lip Colour Sheers, but I ultimately decided to go with the original cream formula because at $49 a pop, I want purity of colour and full colour pay-off. After much contemplation, I decided to go with Pink Dusk as my everyday shade and Violet Fatale as my bold shade. Everything about these lipsticks screams luxury, from the formula to the packaging. And let me tell you, they are even more stunning in person.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Opal

And then I went to Sephora. In fact, I went to three different locations over the course of four days because I kept getting tempted by all the things. The first thing I picked up? The Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette. Now, I knew that this coveted palette had returned permanently, but in Canada, it's offered as an online exclusive only. I was always on the fence about picking up the single Ambient Lighting Powders because they're $52 each here, and I told myself that if the palette ever came back, I would buy it then. So when I saw this in store, I knew I had to grab it (and for the American price of $58 instead of the ridiculous marked-up price here at $67). And since I was on a highlighter kick, I also picked up the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Opal. I've heard a lot about Becca as a brand, but had never tried anything by them and when I saw this highlighter, I knew it was going to be the item coming home with me. Champagne gold with a gorgeous peachy-pink pearl... It is stunning. And it's also always sold out online. When I saw that there was one left in stock, I snatched that baby up right away, 'cause it was meant to be.

Marc Jacobs Style Eye-Con No. 7 Plush Eyeshadow Palette in The Siren

Marc Jacobs Lovemarc Lip Gel in Role Play and Have We Met?

My next must-have was the Marc Jacobs Stye Eye-Con No. 7 Plush Shadow in The Siren. Now, I have heard many a great thing about the Marc Jacobs eyeshadow palettes, but at $71 each in Canada, I just could not justify the price given how many palettes I already have at home. But when I started seeing the photos and swatches of The Siren online, I knew this was gonna be the one to splurge on. It is a new and limited edition palette for summer in gorgeous sleek white packaging, and the combination of shades is one of the most unique that I've seen in a while (plus, I have nothing else like it in my collection). Each shade is buttery and incredibly pigmented to boot. Plus, the lower American retail price of $59 made it all the more tempting for me. While I was drooling over all the Marc Jacobs make-up, I also picked up two of the Lovemarc Lip Gels on impulse. I wanted very wearable shades that could go with a variety of looks, so I picked up Role Play (a neutral rosy beige) and Have We Met? (a warm shimmering pink).

NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base, Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero and Rockstar, and Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Melted Violet

Bumble and Bumble Cityswept Finish and Thickening Dryspun Finish, and Fresh Sugar Lychee Eau de Parfum

Tocca Cleopatra Fragrance Viaggio Set (VIB 500 Point Perk) and Soap & Glory Hand Food

I also picked up an extra tube of my favourite NARS eye primer because I'm nearly finished my current one; two of the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils in Zero (matte blackest black) and Rockstar (metallic eggplant) because I wanted creamy, pigmented pencils that are also budge- and smudge-proof and would wear well on the waterline when I do smoky eyes; and a tube of the new Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Melted Violet (which was sold out at two of the locations I went to) because it is one of the most stunning orchid purple shades I have ever seen and the formula is stellar. I also picked up another can each of Bumble and Bumble's Cityswept Finish (love it for creating a "piece-y" look when I wear my hair down) and Thickening Dryspun Finish (I wash my hair everyday so it's usually too squeaky clean to do much with, but this gives the perfect "second-day hair" texture) because it's $8 cheaper over there than here (if you do the math, it's just over 20% off). I also bought a new bottle of my favourite Fresh Sugar Lychee Eau de Parfum because no matter how much I love other fragrances, I just can't help but coming back to this one (it's been my go-to for six years now). Also because it's $15 cheaper in the States. Finally, I picked up a travel-size tube of Soap & Glory's Hand Food Hydrating Hand Cream to keep in my purse (incredibly hydrating but not greasy, and has a nice fresh scent to it), and then redeemed 500 points for another Tocca Cleopatra Fragrance Viaggio Set, which comes with a mini candle and a mini rollerball perfume.

TheBalm InStain Long-Wearing Powder Staining Blush in Pinstripe and Swiss Dot

Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate, Ultra Facial Oil-Free Lotion, and Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado; and Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant

Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Va Va Voom and Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Taboo

My mom and I were at a Duane Reade one night to grab some bottled water when I saw that they were carrying TheBalm in their cosmetics section (only selected locations carry it), so I took the opportunity to pick up the other two shades of their InStain Long-Wearing Powder Staining Blush that I was missing. Then, at Bloomingdale's, I stopped by the Kiehl's counter to pick up a bottle of the Midnight Recovery Concentrate that I've been curious to try out for a while now, plus a bottle of Ultra Facial Oil-Free Lotion to use as my summer moisturizer, and a little tub of their Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado because I thought it was about time to hop on the eye cream bandwagon (I've been noticing little dry lines under my eyes recently so I am obviously panicking now). I also picked up a new tube of Malin + Goetz's Eucalyptus Deodorant because it's the only one that I've tried that I'm not allergic to and that doesn't have an overpowering scent. Finally, I couldn't resist two nail polishes: Deborah Lippmann's Va Va Voom (how have I never seen this one before?!) and Chanel's Taboo (I don't usually get into dark polishes for summer, but this one was just too pretty to resist).

And... that's it. I swear.

  1. Hahahaha. I don't know, the month is still young. ;) What a glorious haul!

TF Violet Fatale is on my list along with Wild Ginger. I'm readying myself to go full on purple for fall, so I need to ease into it with some blue pinks and plummy purples first. Glad you finally got that Too Faced Melted shade. I think in another two months, I could go there, lol.

How do you get those UD pencils to stay on the waterline? Because they always smudged on me unless I set with powder.

    1. I also hauled A SHIT-TON of MAC stuff (Osbournes, Pedro Lourenco, Lorde lipstick...). Bad, bad, bad. I am literally running out of room for make-up, LOL.

I loooove the look of Wild Ginger and was tempted to get it, but I have too many orangey reds like it and since I gave myself a two-lipstick max at Tom Ford, I had to choose my top shades. I knew I wanted Pink Dusk FOR SURE because it's gorgeous and I can see it being my go-to shade all year round, but my heart leans more purple than orange these days, and Violet Fatale came home with me. :P

I am mighty tempted to get another Too Faced Melted shade (or two... or three...). It's a phenomenal formula. But you KNOW I had to have the purple shade. I let myself choose one, and there was really no contest.

I haven't fully tested out the UD pencils yet, so I'll get back to you about the waterline thing. I just heard it was great for wearing in the waterline so I grabbed them.

  2. LOL. I like Chanel Taboo a lot :P I was tempted by the Too Faced lipsticks but couldn't pick a color (thankfully).

And the palette! I will review mine soon, too - it's purrrrrty.

    1. I think the Melted Peony and Melted Coral shades would look great on you! :D

For some reason, I thought Taboo was LE and thought I had missed my chance to get it, but I guess they added it permanently! I love it -- looks like a galaxy in the bottle! And the formula? Flawless.

I've only swatched the palette so far and LOVE IT but haven't played around with it yet. Can't wait to read your review. :D

  3. I must be a bit loopy tonight because I actually don't think your haul is that crazy haha. I mean, you got a SHIT TON of stuff, but it's all varied and seems like things you'll use, so I think you did great! SO loving the TF lippies, great picks! I am totally smitten for the brand, its a good thing I can buy it around here because I think I would be seriously, seriously broke LOL!

And Taboo never really interested me, but everyone seems to love it so much, I might have to give it another look...

    1. LOOOOL! Maybe 'cause you had such a crazy haul when you went to NYC? ;) But thanks, I think I did well, too, at least with variety. We have TF here in Toronto, but for some reason, I never feel inclined to buy it here even though there isn't a huge mark-up on them (I think they're $52 here, versus $49 in the US). Maybe because when I'm in NYC, I have VACATION BRAIN, and spending money isn't as indulgent... :P

I don't think Taboo is necessarily a MUST-HAVE given all the dark shimmery purples out there now... but this one's formulation is TO DIE FOR. It's a one-coater but has a gorgeously fluid consistency, and goes on SO SMOOTH and is completely self-levelling. This, to me, is what makes Chanel's polishes sing and worth the $27 price tag.

  4. Hi thanks for the beauty posts. I am interested in nails art, and always looking for nails images online for ideas.
The 2 nails bottles in this picture is so unique among all the nails bottles I have seen. That is true.

  5. Love the haul! You always buy the best stuff :)

I have Wild Ginger and while I love it, I do have to "plan" to wear it. It's not one of those 'slap-and-go' lipsticks. The formula for TF lipsticks is just gorgeous though.

That Marc Jacobs palette is so you. Kiehl's avocado eye cream is a life saver for me. I always use it in transition weather or when my eye area is a bit dry. I've been trying Shiseido's Benefiance anti wrinkle eye cream to reduce the appearance of my fine lines. Reached 30 now, so the battle with aging intensifies..hahaha.

Have you tried the Marc Jacobs concealer brush? It's really good at applying concealer in that 'patting' motion. I use it for the MAC Pure Orange corrector and it works really well. Next on my list is a Marc Jacobs lipstick for sure :)

    1. Thanks, Fieran! Think I did pretty well this time around. ;)

I know exactly what you mean about Wild Ginger. That's why I had to get two -- a brighter "fun" shade (the kind that I'd have to plan around, like you), and a neutral "everyday" shade that I can slap on on go. I was actually quite tempted by Wild Ginger, but I just have way too many orange-reds and they all end up looking so similar. :(

When I saw this MJ palette, I knew I had to have it. The others, I can totally pass on (especially given the price tag!), but this one is just so unique and bold but also well-coordinated. :) LOVE IT. Would also look great on your skintone, BTW... Just sayin'.

I actually wasn't planning to buy that eye cream because I don't know if I really NEED one (I'm using one more for preventative measures, lol), but as far as they go, the Kiehl's one is nice and simple and not too heavy and absorbs nicely. And doesn't make my eyes puff up, lol.

I haven't tried any of the MJ brushes. I swear by the MAC #227 for concealer, but I really quite like the look of the MJ foundation brushes. They're $58 each, though, so I might wait for a sale. I should really be on a brush ban because I have SO MANY, but you know... investments. ;) I actually had my heart set on the Matte Lip Gel lipsticks, but they don't carry them in-store anymore. :( May be tempted to buy them online at some point, though. As if I need anymore lipsticks...

  6. Wowowowow....this haul is even better than the fashion stuff. All great picks. How do you find the texture of the TF lippies? I have only one which was gifted to me and I don't know if it's just mine but it applies a bit flaky, ie. leaves bits of lipstick on my lips - eeks. I have to smooth it out with my fingers or a lip brush. But love the shade which is a peachy colour. I've been very curious about Malin + Goetz, esp their legendary dry rum perfume but did not manage to find time to go to their store.

    1. Loool, thank you! My TF lipsticks are both beautifully pigmented and go on super-smooth and creamy. Not flaky or chalky or uneven at all. Wondering if you got a bad one, or an old one?

Malin + Goetz is also available at Bloomingdales in NYC! :) That's where I get my stuff. Never actually been to their store!
