Tegan and Sara: Live at Downsview Park — Shock to Your System

Here's the video I took of Tegan and Sara at Downsview Park on July 6, performing "Shock to Your System," from their latest album, Heartthrob. This is actually my favourite song off the album, which is really saying something because Heartthrob has proven to be their most experimental and ambitious album to date while also being exceptionally catchy and well-rounded. I was actually (pleasantly) surprised that they decided to include "Shock to Your System" on their set list because sonically, lyrically, and melodically, it's a really different vibe than the rest of their album, and actually most of their work. The lyrics are like a conversation between mind and heart; on one hand giving yourself a reality check and staying humble, and on the other, advising yourself to be stronger and more confident. But it's the melodic arrangement that truly makes this song a masterpiece: dark, brooding, haunting, but also inexplicably sexy. They've definitely created a mood here, touching on themes like isolation and loneliness — it's like Drive in a Tegan and Sara song.
