MAC Archie's Girls: Spoiled Rich Eyeshadow Palette

Today, MAC released its collaboration collection with Archie Comics, called Archie's Girls. As the name implies, this collection is inspired by Betty and Veronica and their "epic love triangle" with Archie. This collection "captures the legendary rivalry of sweet blonde Betty and vivacious brunette Veronica" with "two contrasting colour collections." This collection is comprised of 32 products — 24 of which are new and limited edition, two of which are re-promotes, and six of which are permanent — and five collectable accessories (which will only be available online and at MAC Stores). Archie's Girls sees the release of two new eyeshadow quad palettes, one for each Betty and Veronica (this is the review for Veronica's palette). Each eyeshadow palette comes in a special edition white metal rectangular case featuring a comic-style design with the faces of Betty, Archie, and Veronica. This design extends to the box packaging as well. Each palette contains 5.6 grams of product, and retails for $52.

Pin-Up Purple, Spoiled Rich, Ron Ron Run, and Gravel

Pin-Up Purple, Spoiled Rich, Ron Ron Run, and Gravel

Pin-Up Purple is a medium pinked orchid purple in a Frost finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. The texture is soft and silky, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is less pinked than Creme de Violet.
Spoiled Rich is a medium-dark brightened violet with red undertones in a Frost finish. This is a new and limited edition. The texture is soft and silky, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is darker than Creme de Violet, and lighter and much more pinked than Nocturnelle.
Ron Ron Run is a dark navy-purple with a shimmer-sheen in a Satin finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. The texture is on the drier, stiffer side, and as a result, can go on patchy and unevenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered easily, but does take some work to blend out. It is darker and much more purple than Contrast, and darker and more blue than Purple Haze.
Gravel is a dark cool-toned grey in a Matte finish. This is a re-promoted shade from 2011's Fall Colour collection, and is limited edition. The texture is on the drier, stiffer side, and as a result, can go on patchy and unevenly. It has medium-high pigmentation and semi-opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered easily, but does take some work to blend out. It is lighter than Typographic, and cooler than Print.

I really wish the textures were better across the board with this palette because I really, truly love the colours. All four shades do apply much better (smoother and more pigmented) on the eye than in a swatch, but Ron Ron Run and Gravel run more sheer and patchy, which makes them a little bit harder to blend out. Spoiled Rich almost has the opposite problem of the Caramel Sundae palette; this palette has more unique shades but harder-to-use textures. This palette creates a seriously gorgeous purple smoky eye, though, so for those purple fiends, this is still worth taking a look at. But if you're not really into the packaging or a die-hard Betty and Veronica fan, I would suggest building a custom MAC palette instead.

  1. That's too bad about the quality because Gravel looks like an amazing shade. Weirdly, I don't love purple shadows though that could change any minute.

    1. I rocked this palette today and created a stunning smoky eye with it, so it's not that this quad doesn't work well... It's just that for the price, I think a lot of people could get smoother, silkier eyeshadows, you know? But using a stiffer brush to apply the colour and then blending out with a fluffier brush is key to using this.

I have a THING with purple eyeshadows. Like, purple's my favourite when I want a more dramatic eye. If you like Gravel, you'd like Copperplate, which has AMAZING pigmentation (it's a Matte2, which are smooth and buttery). :)

      SUDDENLY... PURPLE!

  2. I also am not a big purple shadow gal - I think that kind of purple doesn't do my skintone any favors (nor my dark undereye circles!), so this doesn't really grab me anyway. Too bad about the pigmentation though - I can see that being a disappointment for some :(

    1. I think it really depends on how you wear these purples. I can see these working as a gorgeous smoky eye on a darker skintone. But like I recommend to everyone, if you're gonna rock a dark smoky eye, the rest of your face has to be perfect and pristine and completely even, so medium-full coverage foundation and concealer (especially for dark circles)!

The pigmentation isn't that bad; I've worn this palette a few times already, and the darker colours are actually pigmented, but they are just on the drier side, so you do have to use a stiffer brush to layer the colour... I just think $52 can seem pretty steep for this palette.

Also, for your skintone, MAC's Star Violet is GORGEOUS. Check it out. :)
