MAC Heavenly Creature: Lipsticks

MAC released a new collection in-stores today called Heavenly Creature. This collection is comprised of three different parts: Colour, Eyes, and Skin. Together, Heavenly Creature features a total of 35 products — 25 of which are new and limited edition, three of which are re-promotes, and seven of which are permanent. Heavenly Creature sees the release of five shades of lipstick, of which three are new and limited edition and two are re-promotes. MAC's lipsticks are vanilla-scented, but taste-free. Each lipstick comes in regular black packaging, contains 3 grams of product, and retails for $17.50. These shades are applicable for the Back To MAC recycling program at all locations.

Cusp of Dawn, Cut a Caper, Fire Sign, Pleasureseeker, and Venus

Cusp of Dawn is a light warm peachy beige in a Lustre finish. It is a new and limited edition shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has low-medium pigmentation and semi-sheer colour pay-off. It is less pink than Viva Glam V, less peach than Freckletone, and lighter than Jubilee.

Cut a Caper is a medium coral-pink in a Lustre finish. It is a re-promoted shade from 2010's Prêt-à-Papier collection, and is limited edition. The texture is soft and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium pigmentation and semi-opaque colour pay-off. It is less pink than Fanfare, more pink than Ravishing, and lighter and softer than Crosswires.

Fire Sign is a medium-dark watermelon red in a Lustre finish. It is a new and limited edition shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium-high pigmentation and semi-opaque colour pay-off. It is darker and more red than Lustering, and much more pink than Ladybug.

Pleasureseeker is a light pinked peach in a Glaze finish. It is a re-promoted shade from 2008's Neo Sci-Fi collection, and is limited edition. The texture is soft and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has low-medium pigmentation and semi-sheer colour pay-off. It is much lighter than Ravishing, less pink than Sandy B., and darker and more peach than Hue.

Venus is a medium pink with subtle yellow undertones in a Lustre finish. It is a new and limited edition shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium pigmentation and semi-opaque colour pay-off. It is warmer than Lovelorn, and darker than Hot Gossip.

All five shades performed as expected for their finishes. Lustre and Glaze finish lipsticks aren't my favourites for a couple reasons, but mainly because they have a very short wear-time before fading and also because they can make lips look dry after wear (it's deceiving, because when it's freshly applied, it looks glossy and juicy). For those wondering, Lustre and Glaze finish lipsticks are really quite similar, with Glaze lipsticks being ever so slightly glossier and perhaps a little creamier. However, these five shades offer a really nice contrast to the vibrant, matte colours we've been seeing a lot of lately. These sort of reflect that other side of summer make-up; whereas one side is bright and flashy with full-on colour saturation, these offer sheer washes of fun, juicy colours. For those who want a new, fun summer lipstick shade but are scared of wearing the super-bright, intense shades that are so popular right now, you might want to take a look at these.

  1. Cut A Caper & Fire Sign are my faves. Despite its somewhat boring shades, Prêt-à-Papier was one of my favourite MAC collections, after To The Beach. That dry looking bit has me shuddering away from these though. My lips always get mega dry no matter how moisturizing lipsticks claim to be.

    1. Those are my favourites as well. :) I think Prêt-à-Papier was a really nice neutral collection -- it had pops of coral in it that kept it interesting. Ironically, I didn't pick up a lot from that collection, 'cause I picked up SO MUCH STUFF from To The Beach and I was like, "Whoaaaa, need to budget your money, Denise." And To The Beach was such a phenomenal collection, I pretty much wanted everything from it, lol.

I usually wear Lustre/Glaze lipsticks with a lip pencil underneath it for longevity and also to bring out the colour of the lipstick. I find it also helps lipsticks to keep looking true to what they're supposed to look like (in terms of colour and texture). Other times, I'll just dab some lip conditioner on top of the lipstick to help keep it looking and feeling moist. None of MAC's regular lipsticks really claim to be moisturizing, though I find the Amplified and Cremesheen formulas to feel comfortable on the lip and keep looking creamy.

  2. I've read before that these can somehow be drying on the lips - it's so strange! I do like the look of these, and the more sheer quality does appeal to my casual Summer looks!

    1. Yeah, I know Temptalia maintains that Lustre finishes are drying but I also find that she rates products extremely harshly (for example, MAC doesn't state that these are moisturizing, but she will automatically deduct points on her rating because they aren't moisturizing). I find that some Lustre shades can be drying after some wear time, but they're not too bad for the most part. :) Plus, these colours are just too pretty to resist. But I'm the type of person who will make a product work as long as I love the colour!
