Mill Street Brew Pub

After seeing Metric at Sugar Beach, we headed over to the Distillery District and had dinner at the Mill Street Brew Pub.

A pint of Mill St. Stockhouse Ale

Cheers with Mill St. Stock Ale and Wit Beer

Pulled Pork Tacos

Pulled Pork Taco

Short Rib Poutine

Grilled Portobello Sandwich

Chicken Pot Pie

They offer $6 appetizers on Mondays, so we obviously took advantage of their special. The pulled pork tacos were filled with tender, juicy, and super flavourful pulled pork that was coated with the perfect amount of sauce, topped with a generous dollop of avocado crème fraîche and fresh cilantro — so addictive, I could've eaten like, eight of those. We also shared the short rib poutine: Yukon Gold fries are topped with pulled beef short rib that has been braised with their Tankhouse Ale, and a generous helping of real cheese curds and deliciously rich beef gravy. Easily the best poutine I've ever eaten at a pub in Toronto. Definitely worth getting on its own as an entrée.

We also shared a couple of mains, one of which was the portobello sandwich. Huge, juicy portobello mushroom caps are marinated in balsamic vinegar and their Tankhouse Ale and grilled to perfection, and then topped with sautéed baby spinach, roasted red peppers, and herbed creamy goat cheese on a toasted focaccia bun. Seriously the best vegetarian sandwich I've ever eaten. And, finally, some classic pub fare: Chicken pot pie. Pulled chicken, pearl onions, and sautéed mushrooms in the most addictive creamy gravy made with their Stock Ale, baked in a perfectly golden crust, served with Yukon Gold mashed potatoes and buttered peas. So glorious. I seriously need to go there again (and again and again...). The Tankhouse Lane Burger and Lobster & Avocado Club are calling my name.

  1. Ugh, I'm salivating here! Been there for drinks but never had food there. And now I'm like, "WHHYYYYY??"

    1. Haha, I don't drink, so I didn't partake in the beers, but the food? Oh, god, the food is glorious, Liz. You NEED to eat there next time. Everything I tried there was ridiculous, so I can't even tell you to order one thing over the other. I really need to spend more time downtown...

    2. I didn't even drink beer until about five years ago and didn't really like Mill St. until this past year. YES, do come downtown more often! And we have to plan Summerlicious.

    3. Lol, I used to drink lots of beer... up until I stopped drinking alcohol because I realized my body doesn't metabolize it. I can have like, a sip here and there, but I'll never have a full pint myself. I had a sip from everyone's pint and I think the only one I liked from Mill St. was Organic!

I know, it's my goal to go downtown at least once every two weeks this summer. There's just no excuse not to take advantage of the awesome restaurants our city has to offer! When does Summerlicious start? We should plan soon! :)

    4. Just looking it up now... It runs July 6-22 (I think Mary's away starting July 2? so we can reserve a later date) and reservations start June 21. Here's a complete list of participating restaurants:

If we can find a day for lunch reservation, I'm going to throw out Sassafraz in Yorkville just because it's a beautiful restaurant - and afterwards we can walk around the Yorkville area where you can go nuts at Sephora/Anthropologie/1000 other boutiques. :) Let me know which you're interested in and if I know the restos, I can give you the lowdown!

    5. I'm down for pretty much anything, but it depends on the day because I don't have the July schedule yet and I may not know until near the end of the month. :/ Dinner is usually do-able, but lunch might be a bit harder.

I've always wanted to try Sassafraz but never ended up going, and I'm definitely down for a day in Yorkville! :) I haven't been there down since I went to make-up school (two years ago...). :P Have you heard any good things about Oliver and Bonacini restaurants (Jump, Biff's Bistro, etc.)?

    6. I've been to all of them, lol. O&B is the most casual and moderate in price, Jump is very corporate and pricey though the food is good (but not amazing), and I like Biff's and find it's a good introductory French resto.

Sassafraz has awesome brunch, so we can go there for that some day if not for Summerlicious. I wouldn't recommend it for dinner because it gets super dim inside and you can't see anything (unless we eat on the patio). But it's their main dining room with the living wall and skyroof that's really gorgeous.

We'll wait for your July schedule then! I'm not sure myself what my schedule is going to be like. Was going to take another night course but I'm feeling beaten down and might drop it before it starts.

    7. Oh, and if you wanted to try Canoe, we have to call on the first day of reservations because it's one of the restaurants that gets booked up immediately. I suppose we could book something and just cancel it later if it doesn't work out?

    8. The only one I've been to is O&B because it's the closest, lol. I definitely want to try Auberge du Pommier one day, though, maybe for a special occasion or something... But it's just too expensive for a regular dinner out. :P

Maybe we can try Biff's, then? It sounds a bit more low-key... but I just saw Canoe's menu and everything sounds SO GOOD. I CAN'T DECIDE. I would love to try Canoe's tasting menu one day... you know, if I had $100 to spend on a dinner... So maybe Biff's? OH GOD, YOU DECIDE.

And yeah, we can always book for whenever and cancel if needed. :)

Sounds like you're putting yourself through the wringer, Liz. Work and school is really hard and from the sounds of it on your blog, it's taking a toll on your body... :( How many more credits do you need?

    9. I'm going to try to take 21st off work. If I have time, I can harass us into a reservation at Canoe towards the end of the Summerlicious run. If not, I'll shoot for Biff's. Sounds okay?

There's another restaurant nearby that's my absolute fave and it's called beerbistro. They're not part of Summerlicious but they have amazing mussel bowls and the best fries ever. I take everybody there. We'll go there too some time. :)))

I have 1.5 credits to go after this 0.5 ends. Working for my parents and stressing about money really didn't help, but dragging out school part-time for so long has really worn me down as well. Or I'm just getting old and all those years of not eating healthy is finally turning on me. I don't know, man. I need a break.

    10. Sounds great!

Beerbistro sounds AMAZING. I'm down for moules-frites anytime! :D

:( Take a break, then, Liz. You really need one and you deserve one. Why don't you just start back up in September? Have a good summer, you know?
