Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in On The Beach

My order from Nail Polish Canada arrived (super speedy delvery, too — I waited maybe two days?) and included in it were several Deborah Lippmann shades. I had bought the coveted, ultra-hyped Mermaid's Dream from the Spring collection back in March, but I finally got around to picking up the other colour from the collection called On The Beach. I usually only pick up Lippmann's glitter polishes (Across The Universe, Bad Romance, Happy Birthday, Ruby Red Slippers, etc.), so this is my first experience with a cream finish shade from Lippmann.

On The Beach is a medium electric blue in a cream finish. It goes on smoothly and evenly, but I did find it to have a thinner consistency with medium pigmentation and semi-opaque colour pay-off. I needed three coats for opacity. That having been said, Deborah Lippmann's polishes have a relatively fast dry time, so I felt like having to do three coats took the same time as having to do two coats of another brand's polish. What Lippmann excels at in her nail polish is the brush — it gives a beautiful, smooth, even application. It's just the right size to give clean, controlled strokes without smudging or going off the nail bed on to the skin. It is less teal than China Glaze's Flyin' High, slightly lighter than Sephora by OPI's Slushied, and similar to Zoya's Robyn. While On The Beach is a fantastically fun shade, there are many dupes out there that have more pigmented formulas and are quite a lot cheaper.

  1. There's interviews and videos of Deborah L talking about staring at some body of water and coming up with these shades. I love the blue in the bottle but was so unimpressed when I swatched it on the nail that I didn't pick it up. Now you're making me want to get it again!

    1. Pfftttt, this doesn't look like a body of water AT ALL!!! LIES!!! I'd be like, "Well, I was enjoying a large blue raspberry Icee at the movies..."

If you like this shade, I say go for Zoya's Robyn if it's still available. It's so much cheaper and way more pigmented!

  2. Honestly Denise, you need to stop bombarding me with photos of sexy ass nail polish shades. Damnnnn youuuu..... *shakes fist*

I know the shades are not similar, but I kind of prefer Dior's St. Tropez over this..

    1. Eeps, sorry! (*evil laugh*)

If I had to pick between the two, I'd probably go for Saint-Tropez over this as well. I'm wayyyy more of a sucker for the aquamarine shades... :P

  3. I'm so in love with Deborah Lippmann shades. If she sold me a transparent bottle of polish, I would buy it. Seriously, my love makes me blind to any flaws in her products.

That said, I saw this shade but I didn't think I'd be able to do justice to it. I'm more a fan of darker shades. You, on the other hand, make it look beautiful :)

    1. Oh wait, I do own her Addicted to Speed topcoat, which is effectively transparent. I'm beyond help.

    2. LOL!!! Don't get me wrong, I love Deborah Lippmann's glitter polishes... but so far, the non-glitter ones are kind of disappointing -- I just thought they'd have better pigmentation like A-England. I have Don't Tell Mama which is also on the sheer side... That having been said, I agree that most of her shades are very unique and I am now very tempted to pick up Ray of Light even though I originally said I wasn't interested in Lippmann's 3D holo polishes...

But thank you! I think you'd look great in this shade, I don't know why you only wear darker shades!!!

    3. Hmm, you are right but I guess I don't think about it that way when I use Lippmann's non-glittery shades. I found Stormy Weather quite hard to work with and I had to dilute it with nail polish thinner. Don't Tell Mama is a 3-coater for me, definitely quite sheer.

Ray of Light is pretty but Makeup Bloggette (http://retailtherapy.onsugar.com/New-Deborah-Lippmann-Polishes-Mermaids-Dream-Ray-Light-Laras-Theme-Photos-Swatches-23093069) said that you can dupe it with a blue and then the flakies on top. I am too in love with the blue shade and I love the formula. The jelly finish is so nice to look at. I'm just a consumerist I guess :)

I don't know why I only wear darker shades either. I mean I have bright shades like MAC's Vivid Effect and Lippmann's Between The Sheets but I wear them quite rarely - when I feel like I have the guts, which is not often. I'm weird, I know.

    4. I love how Lippmann's polishes apply, but the formula doesn't really justify a $20 price point. :P It doesn't mean I won't keep buying her polishes, I'll just hold out for the more unique shades, like Ray of Light. :) And while I know you can dupe it, it would mean I have to buy the flake polish and a blue jelly polish as well, lol. I might as well just buy Ray of Light, AM I RIGHT?

      I'm a consumerist, too. :P

Fieran, new goal this year: WEAR BRIGHT NAIL POLISH!!! Break the habit! Likewise with eyeshadow! ;)

    5. Yes, Mistress *bows*

I do wear bright eyeshadow like blues and greens, even teals.

I shall have to wear a bright nail polish soon but I just cut my nails again, they've been so flaky lately.

    6. Do you wear warmer colours? Pinks, purples, oranges, etc.? Shades like Star Violet, Plum Dressing, Cranberry, Amber Lights, and Coppering would all look GORGEOUS on your skintone. :)

Okay, if you can wear brights on your eyes, you can DEFINITELY wear them on your nails!!!
