Edward and I made a trip over the border today to do some bargain shopping at Fashion Outlets.
I don't usually like Coach's handbags, but I have always loved the Sabrina satchel from their Madison collection (which has been discontinued, a fact that still baffles me considering how well this particular model sold). I bought one the year it came out in a light grey, which I still use, and it was originally $498 (though, at the time, I had used a VIP 25% off coupon, so it was around $423 after tax). At the Coach outlet store today, I found a newer version of the large Sabrina satchel (it is slightly bigger than the original, and with the cursive Coach logo) in black leather for $199. They happened to be giving out coupons for an additional 30% off, so I just couldn't resist. The final total was $150 after tax. Definitely my best deal of the day.
Which counteracts the lack of a deal I got at Michael Kors. I ended up buying a black silicone and yellow gold stainless steel chronograph watch, a watch that I'd been eyeing online for a while but refused to buy until I tried it on in real life. I'd been looking for a nice-sized watch that I can wear to work that doesn't have a metal bracelet because I'm allergic to most metals. My work requires that I only wear black or metal accessories, so this fit the bill really well, since the stainless steel bracelet is wrapped with black silicone. I like that the face is large without being oversized (I find that oversized watches make my wrists look super fat and weird), and I like that it's not too flashy but the chronograph style keeps it from being too simple. But even the Michael Kors outlet store didn't offer any discount on this watch, selling it at the regular retail price of $195. I take solace in the fact that I paid the 8% New York state tax instead of the 13% tax here in Ontario.
I also went to Banana Republic and snatched up a lovely black belted trench coat for $83 (40% off from $139) and a super-soft black key-printed scarf for $30 (no sale, sadly, but oh-so-cute). And before we left, I went to Bath & Body Works and stocked up on Eucalyptus Mint anti-bacterial hand soap (6 for $20) and mini hand sanitizers (10 at $1 each) because every single store in and around Toronto is sold out of everything in this particular scent. I am obsessed with it: it's clean and fresh and inoffensive, and appeals both guys and girls (Shawn loves it). It is perfect, and I just wish Bath & Body Works kept this scent permanently here. So, yeah. All in all, it's been a pretty good day.
I demand a "whats in my purse" post! :P :P :P
ReplyDeleteLove your purse :) Coach is nice but I'm not a fan of the monogrammed canvas design.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the watch! I have been thinking of getting one for ages but too scared... you know how I am!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to Detroit this weekend for outlet and regular shopping! I thought Buffalo was a bit boring so I'm trying Detroit for something new!
Haha, Irene, I promise to do one in the next month or so, just for you! ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Fieran! I hate most monogrammed canvas designs, not just for Coach, but also for LV, Gucci, etc. Most of them are pretty tacky, and scream, "I BOUGHT AN EXPENSIVE DESIGNER PURSE, LOOK AT ME!" Plus, leather is so much sturdier than canvas. It looks better, it feels better, it performs better... Why do people even buy canvas?
Hey, Kat -- LOL, I don't think you should be scared to buy a Michael Kors watch, given that there are so many on sale online (check Amazon.ca) and also that they're a fraction of the price of handbags (say... your LV one or your Chloe one...). Let me know how Detroit goes. I've also heard Pennsylvania is pretty good!
Hmm, perhaps canvas works great for rainy weather and is a bit more durable than leather [no scratches, scrapes, etc.] - especially if you don't like the worn leather look (which I think has a lot more character than shiny-brand-new leather).
ReplyDeleteI do have a Coach canvas bag that the bf got me. It's a bit less "obvious" with the monogram but I agree with you :) There's no need to parade around the fact that you spent an arm and a leg on handbag. Fashion should be classy and tasteful. The price shouldn't matter, it's the overall look that should :)
I actually like how leather looks and feels after it's been worn in! I don't know, I'm really not a canvas fan myself, but a lot of my friends and co-workers love it. I just feel like it's not worth it... I don't really think it's more durable than leather -- a well-made leather bag should last decades! Though, I'll agree, it's less heart-breaking to carry a canvas bag in the rain. ;)
